I was thinking Death Stranding looks like an interesting game to try and then I see it's like 40 hours! I know there is a 90% chance it will not hold my attention for that long. With most games moving to "open-world" it has made the problem bad this last generation, as that format is ripe for padding.

Anyone else feel like this?

That's why more games need DLC mechanics you cna buy to not have to play

40 hours is very short though. A game has to be 60 hours at least to be considered long imo.

They're either too short or too long. R3MAKE was like 7 hours long, and Cold Steel 3 will end up 100 hours by the time I'm done

FF7 Remake hit it nearly perfectly for me. 30 hours for normal doing most of the stuff and then another 50 or so to do hardmode and get the plat

tbh, anything more than 20 hours is too much for me these days, unless if you're talking about open-world titles and/or RPGs, and that's why I rarely play open-world games anymore.

even something like The Last of Us Part II, which is one of my favorite games, felt like it was going pretty long.

I wasn't saying that is right for a game. I'm just stating that the game in question is short. That doesn't mean anything bad, but there are longer games. Much longer.

More than that, they're too repetitive. How long can you spend grinding the same mission over and over again just to find the +2 physical damage ring or whatever.

Video games should not feel like jobs.

Id rather have a 10-15 hour game thats fleshed out, with decent end game or replay ability. I cant stand that every game wants to be open world 50+ hours with just bs filler. Pointless fetch quests and three different types of 100 different pointless items to collect

I agree, I don't really like games that drag on for a million hours these days. There's too many games out there and not enough time. Unless I really love something, I probably won't even bother to beat it.

25-30 hours is just about perfect for me. i agree that many games these days are too long and much of the content feels like padding.

This is my biggest issue with games nowadays. It's not even so much the length of games, it's all the pointless shit you have to collect to plug into the game's pointless crafting system or whatever other stupid upgrade system they've devised.

Sweet spot for a campaign is 8-15 hours long imo. 20 is kinda stretching it. What really matters is replayability and a lot of side/extra content.
20 is perfect to me for platformers/fps/action adventure (like the last of us)

30-50 is perfect to me for open world/rpgs/action adventure (like zelda)

The issue imo isnt that games are too long it's that so much of that legnth comes from boring ass padding. A lot of games feel long because they're expected to be long.

There's a lot of cool games below that length. I also think of 40 hour games as a bit long but some games being that long doesn't really bug me since honestly I feel like game lengths have pretty good variety atm

I was kind of happy with games being incredibly long, the problem is that over time I got spoiled and starting buying more and more games and well

Most of them either had no 'substance' to the story and or just copy eachothers gameplay

Now I really dig short games like SOMA or Bloodborne where the story is told really well through it's lore and items

I still try to find a healthy mix though, I keep forgetting trophies/achievements exist so really I'll play through a game multiple times.. maybe more if I bothered to check the trophy checklist lol

I liked long games as a teenager as I had limited money to buy games but unlimited time, so I was always looking for games that would stretch my dollars the most. As an adult games are financially irrelevant but I have limited time/interest.

I've played 40 hour games that I felt should be shorter, but I've also gladly put 100 hours into AC Odyssey. Give me a mechanic that makes me happy and I'll play that shit into the ground if you let me.

Not a chance. The price of games is rising and I dont want to pay $70 plus tax for a 20-30 hour game. People with your outlook are making developers more lazy

games with long stories out of the box are much preferable to short games that capitalize on online play and dlc to make up for laziness with respect to writing
