So many close at 2PM here. Im having my second cup at a shop other than Starbucks in like 2 years.

Like coffee shops should be open until 9-10.

You shouldn't really be hanging out in coffee shops. People get their coffee on the way to work or during a work break. There's probably not enough business to warrant staying open past the afternoon.

Its really not about the coffee and more about the atmosphere and not being at home. Used to play solo board games at coffee shops all the time and then Id meet people (usually grad students as grad students seem to love board games) and have more people to hang out with. Im not a big coffee person but I like seasonal drinks, just a bit festive.

Its really not about the coffee and more about the atmosphere. I didnt usually even order coffee at my old favorite two shops, I prefer tea.

Is it worse than going to a restaurant, shopping, or gym? I guess theres a bunch of people sitting without masks even if tables are distanced.

So you wanna be a terrible person, like the terrible people you see? You recognize a problem, see it and want to contribute to it...for atmosphere?
Healthy people are gonna start dying before we stop being so dang selfish and worrying about...boredom. Children get bored, adults should have patience.
Do we really have historical records of old pandemics and we still don't learn? Are we that cocky?

Go read a book people...or, and this may be crazy being a gaming site, go play a game.

This is pretty much the reason. Evening coffee isn't really a thing for many people, and smaller coffee shops generally won't make enough from the handful of people that will stop in to justify paying staff for the extra 8 hours you're proposing. Starbucks and the like have done enough to diversify their menus and establish an identity of being a hangout spot that they can get away with it, but that's a tall order for a small business.

So is it standard for small coffee shops to close that early? I get the impression from your post that it is. The last two places I lived all the ones I knew of pretty much stayed open to 10 or later and were just local businesses. Maybe Im just now experiencing the norm or had some bias of going to the ones I knew people went to which happened to be established hang out spots.

I'm guessing it varies by where you are based on local cafe-going culture. Bakery cafes or other such places that have plenty of non-coffee things on the menu are also generally going to have more incentive to stay open later, since picking up some bread or dessert items on the way home from work is a pretty common thing for people to do even if they don't want coffee.
