Its been over 3 years that Ive been eligible but just too lazy to bother. This shit is fucking long. Like ok 5 years of history and housing history is fine. But now its asking for every fucking trip that Ive taken outside the US for the last 5 years. Ive taken at least one trip to Montreal and one other country every year. They want specific dates. Just going over every email with travel info. What a pain. I hope theres not much more after.

Imagine having that attitude when you already have the privilege of living here.

Millions of immigrants would literally kill to be in your position and you're treating it like it was some sort of Black Friday camp-out.

Welp after about 5 hours we completed the online form. But we need to gather a crap ton of documents to upload. Marriage certificate, tax history, insurance, bills, etc. My husband mostly has all those so hell be gathering them tomorrow to scan and upload. Very grateful hes taking point on all this. Otherwise Id just get an immigration lawyer, its so overwhelming. My husband would rather do it himself though and save the money.

Keep copies of everything you submit just in case they lose it, happened with my wife. We submitted for the second green card renewal, got the notification that they were working on it, then... didn't hear anything for months. Went to look it up on the USCIS website and it couldn't pull up the records. Called them and they said "Oh yeah it's here and we have everything we need so we'll get right on it, you won't have to submit anything else!"... and then a month later we got another notification saying we needed to... basically submit everything else again.

Also it was awkward when my wife took her test and the agent was like "Congrats you passed! Can you fill out this questionnaire about why you're excited to be a US citizen now?" and we sat there in silence for like ten minutes because it was a weird question lol.

Dual Citizenship will 100% kill any chance of you receiving any sort of clearance, FWIW if that's important for you for work. They're not going to give sensitive information to somebody who maintains citizenship/loyalty to another country as well.

are we talking canadian or US?

She already can't get US clerarance if she's foreign (canadian). At least she can get federal jobs as a citizen.

Wasn't there a super low clearance dual nationals could get?

They technically can but it is a lot harder for them to do so. The reason is that while the person may be a naturalized citizen at that point, their parents/family members/friends are not by any means, which is where part of the security concerns come into play.

first she'd be a permanent resident, so no clearance.
then she becomes a citizen like you said but she's still canadian, so she'd be a dual.

IDK if dual cit preempts it at every level, but caelthus says so. If that is the case, yeah, she still wouldn't get it, unless she renounced her canadian one.

Has Cleo talked about that in the past? Weird tangent to go off on otherwise lol. For public trust clearances it doesn't really make a difference. For federally vetted security clearances it will make a difference, the person has to formally renounce the Canadian citizenship (just saying "Yes I swear allegiance to the US" at the naturalization ceremony isn't enough).

I would think a more... pressing / relevant issue would be that of taxes. Maybe the US is weird, but US citizens living and working abroad are still technically required to file tax returns and pay some amount of money on their foreign income. So that would be a thing to research, if Canada has similar laws. Though you should have been doing that already theoretically lol.

I'm going through the process to get a security clearance right now to work for a defense company.
I was born in Nigeria but became a citizen when I was like 9.

I doubt I'd have gone this far ahead if there was a chance I wouldn't get it due to that.

Funnily enough, I just heard that my approval for an interim clearance was denied, so I'm having to wait longer to get the whole thing approved
