Whats a good prescription drug that will numb the pain completely but not make me loopy/whacked out of my mind? Gonna call my spine doctor tomorrow and ask for a prescription for whatever is suggested.

Its sciatic nerve pain and it fucking sucks and is really limiting what I can do.

Oh hey sciatica twins! Apparently Naproxen is useful. Also turmeric+black pepper to reduce inflammation/swelling of the pinched nerve. Do some stretches too obviously

Have you tried physical therapy? I've managed a near full recovery. Once you learn the stretches you'll know what to do if it ever starts flaring up again. Sciatica is a miserable situation for sure. I feel for you dudes.

Bad shoes will mess you up. I had some of those Dr. Scholl's with padded soles and those were fucking me up bad. I also had an office job and my chair was a piece of shit.

Surgery

I was worried I'd need surgery too, but my doctor referred me to physical therapy first and it was awesome. I really can't recommend it enough. Maybe it's because I was in fairly good shape before the injury, but after about 4-5 months I was almost completely back to normal. I'll probably never be 100% again, but I'm able to do everything I used to and not have to be laid out all the time.

I do hear a lot of wonderful things about PT, surgery is more of a last resort.

PT + surgery + PT may be the way to go if just PT doesn't help.

Have you tried asking your doctor for muscle spasm medication?

You could get a dope ass opioid addiction for your back pain, like I did. 10 years and still truckin. Or you could not. I dunno. I dunno if it's worth it or not. But I need them to do anything. At this point I can take a fistful of them and go do what I need to without being impaired at all. But that's probably not a good thing. I can also go back down to a minimized dose and be content if I'm not doing anything punishing. But if you got a demanding job, it'll probably get out of hand when your tolerance goes up and you can't take breaks to bring it back down. Plus I have no exit strategy. Soo....yeah. maybe no....but also yes? No don't.

do it

Muscle relaxers actually seem to help more than most over-the-counter medicine since a lot of the problem about sciatica is the muscles get so tight they agitate that nerve. That's what PT is all about, they help stretch out those muscles and get your body used to moving properly again.

They talked to me about getting over that hump of moving in certain ways and the way they explained it was basically your body starts learning that certain movements cause pain and it develops a heightened sensitivity to those movements. I think one of the biggest myths about physical therapy is how painful it is. By the time you need physical therapy, you're already in excruciating pain most of the time, so working through it isn't any different than living with it. Then when you quickly start seeing improvement, it motivates you to keep going.

I really don't want this. But surgery or drugs are my only two options as PT hasn't helped at all. If anything, I'm MORE in pain because of it. And now since the doc won't prescribe me anything, I have to explore other avenues to get the prescription....

I'm just in so much pain all the time and I can't stand it anymore.

What was their excuse to not give you meds? I was 19 and they pushed those on me. I definitely did not know the depth of risk in taking them. I was 19, of course I thought I was a special case that would never be controlled by addiction. Lol. Derp.

No. Suggest what he does instead tho. He seems to have already tried getting the doctors recommendations and they're not working.

Get a different doctor? Maybe

Yes, the correct response to not feeling like you're getting appropriate care from your doctor is to see another doctor rather than asking for medication suggestions from non-doctors on a message board and trying to make your doctor give you that medication.
