Very beginning. "If you're under 25." Wtf is this shit? Society tries way too hard to make music a young person thing...whether it's consumers or artists...they want music to be something for people under 25.

Oh noes. Music didn't forever stay in my era and revolve around my personal tastes and I refuse to adapt.

Yes I see what you're saying, but I'm saying you have it backwards. You think things are the way they are because you have to be young to make money as a musician. I'm saying the people who influence culture are making it so that only young people go to concerts, or only young people need to grow and stretch themselves and need music, etc. Our culture is all about growing until you're 25 and then they want you to have a family and be happy with your dead end job.

It's not music today that sucks, it's your taste.

There's plenty of wicked music coming out these days.

I seek out new music and I'm open minded. Wasn't surprised that someone would come in and assume I'm coming from the same boomer-esque old guy place. No. I like to explore music. I just think a lot of the mainstream stuff that really shapes new music is dumb af. We've had the same song topics dominate the mainstream (love and breakups and materialism). Just as Trump is a reflection of our anti-intellectualism, so is mumble rap. We were in a better place in this country when jazz was coming up, and during the 60s. The 90s were legit af too.

I see. I don't think that way, but I get what you're saying. Then again, I've literally met no one that has ever even come close to thinking you had to be under 25 to make music and money off it. Mostly, because there's hundreds, maybe even thousands of artists out there that directly contradict that. That narrative just seems obviously not true and super easy to disprove. I feel like there's music for everyone out there and if you're bitching about music it's probably because you're too lazy to dig for it yourself. You'd rather the radio have to conform to your tastes.

But my whole point is about the mainstream. Culture is mainstream. I'm not talking about subcultures or counterculture. I'm talking about society / mainstream culture. If society could get onboard with thinking that music is for people over 25 then we would be in a good place. But SOCIETY doesn't see how obvious it is that music is for people over 25.

Anybody who says music today sucks isn't putting in any effort to actually try and find it, and just generalizing whatever's huge with the teenage demographic.

Furthermore, under 25 has been the most predominantly age range for pop music artists and the fan demo since, what, the 50s?

There is at least potential that that could change in the near future, especially if people have more leisure time to explore music if there's UBI and less jobs.

A couple years ago I honestly would have been defending today's music. My mom's fiance said he gave up listening to new music in the mid-90s. I would argue with him about it sometimes. But I only argued in favor of music up until like the mid-2010s haha. I mean, a couple years ago I still had my criticisms for the superficiality in the rap genre. But I'm an aspiring musician myself and have only been playing for a few years. I suppose there's sort of a necessity or a utility there in not appreciating music so that I can create something of my own that I'm actually proud of. My standards are getting higher I suppose. I just think that with all the access to YouTube instrumentalist teachers, and all the technology, we could have better artists. Why don't we? It's because of the economy and lack of rights. The US is caving in on itself. I predict good new music is around the corner though, especially if Trump doesn't get another 4 years.

Most pop/mainstream music has been marketed to the 12-29 demos for a long time, with smaller markets for older demos.

That said, highest grossing concert of all time is Desert Trip, a two weekend six act only legacy lineup (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, The Who, Roger Waters), so not all music is marketed to just young people. I was 33 when I attended that four years ago still and spend a shit ton of money attending festivals and solo shows. Had plans to travel from East coast Canada to Napa Valley for Bottlerock this year. Was gonna see some great legacy acts and get exposure to modern stuff I don't normally hear. I was gonna enjoy seeing Miley Cyrus, Finneas, and Janelle Mone in addition to standby faves Dave Matthews Band, Chili Peppers, and Blondie.

There are lots of avenues for people to consume media without listening to the top 40. Bandcamp allows people to give a lot more money directly to their favourite artists instead of the small through streaming or cd sales, especially now that live shows and the all-profit merch at those shows is gone for a while. I just bought two vinyl from an artist's Bandcamp when I'd only heard one song 8 years ago from an ad, and kept watching the video over and over. The new album is a pressing of only 50, which is probably the smallest run of my ~400 collection. She hand-wrote a personalized thank you in the shopping mailer. Listened to it last night and fucking love it.

Marketing hasn't changed a whole lot, and music isn't getting worse. Your perspective may have changed. You can still find lots of great music being released. I love NPR's podcast All Songs Considered, for example.

The 'record review' has never been an art-form and I think that's more telling of anything in the video >_>

Literally making false context out of this air; no artist has ever held a music critics opinion in high regard to the point it matters to them lol

Ive noticed a lot of people don't understand that just cause you respect a reviewer doesn't mean you're adopting their opinions too. When I watch reviewers I strongly disagree with things they say but they also put me on to things about the music that are objective and I didn't know before. Like maybe someone was involved behind the scenes that I didn't know about. You don't watch reviews to blindly agree with the reviewer.

Of course, but it sort of goes without saying that opinions now spread like 0100100 wildfire at an incredible rate than ever before (I may even go as far as to say the trend to follow reputable people based on likes rather than any sort of acreditacin.. like playing music >_> and I know he does but err, let me not go there)

So more people who are unaware of the actual intricacies of the music and that sort of stuff can have people agree with what hes saying about the cool factor of an album cover of an album which can add favorably to his opinion about the album than just the subject matter of the actual music

Its always worth reminding people of this stuff because its true: giving power or influence to jokers who havent risen through any sort of filter can go on to label and change entire landscapes of industries

Its important to remember theres always going to be a section of popular culture always regurgitated that doesnt really matter or exist >_> just a bunch of hype on a hype train to nowhere

That may sound elitist as fuck, but Im cool with that lol

Someone has to take the flack in the name of music , there's good music out there - don't get me wrong.. but the dude hardly knows anything tbh
