there's lots of theories, but legally i dont think it'll ever be classified a a mental illness since that would make it a legitimate defense in court.

I think it's the brain being wired a little different. They aren't "crazy" legally or medically, I don't think.

But I don't think this is a subject we can properly talk about on CE.

I think this is a problem both with the court and the sociopolitical involvement in psychological assessment.

Like, you can recognize that someone with a mental illness is still a danger and and is capable of reasoning. The salience in the important part.

Seems to be a mix of those who have a primary attraction to children and those who get off on the power struggle, with the two sometimes overlapping.

I would think so.

When you were 12 you found other 12 year olds attractive. When you and your brain ages, that no longer happens. They are little kids.

So it would make sense if their brain just didn't grow past that phase as they became adults.

This. It's really no different psychology wise than anyone with any other weird sexual proclivities. The issue is that unlike other sexual deviancies this one greatly harms other living beings that cannot consent when acted upon. No one really chooses to be a pedo, but you do absolutely choose to act on those desires despite knowing that they are inherently harmful to the person you are committing the acts against.

Yeah, no clue what the stats are on closet pesos, but I'd feel the biggest part of the illness is commiting acts while fully knowing the results

I don't know why I'm attracted to women, it's just who I am. I imagine it's the same for pedophiles. It's not something that can be "fixed". Pedophiles have to recognize that acting on that attraction is a monstrous thing to do.

But how much can people choose to not indulge in this illness? Like, do they have control over hiw much they indulge it, with the whole world frowning on it.

I can't figure out how much a control I have when I indulge in opioids or adderall. It simultaneously feels like I have control and I don't. Are the battles in my head already decided as to what action would dominate and I'm just going through the motions. How much am I to blame and how much is addiction to blame? I imagine child predators see it as an addiction.

Pretty much every study of pedophilia is confounded in a way that makes it pretty much useless. Need a way to study it without studying prison populations/offenders. But that would pretty much require widescale destigmatization, so I don't see that happening anytime soon.
