Start Medium with 4 lives. Finally beat Hoth with 1 life left. Play second level which is an on-foot mission. Keep getting my ass kicked and being near death in the first little area. Was this game always this hard? I got all the challenge points back in the day, but I'm not sure if I beat it on Jedi. Btw, the modes are Easy, Medium, Hard, and Jedi for reference.

Yeah some levels like the train are just an absolute nightmare on anything above medium because enemies from 50 yards away have pinpoint accuracy and kill you in like 5 or 6 direct shots.

Good thing there was no incentive to finish the game on any high difficulties. It's mostly just playing for fun.

I remember it being difficult. I could only beat it on easy and even then it was a challenge.

I also remember the levels being unnecessarily long in that game.

Still one of my favorite games of all time, but I don't think I'll try Jedi lol. I will get all the challenge points, however.

We were accustomed to games being harder back then. It didn't feel unusual because so many other shooters and platformers were brutal.

Though to be honest, I always did the cheat mode stuff to play that game.

I was super not ready for how much tougher the AT-ST is on foot >_<

and IG-88 was my first experience with legit AI in a game. I heard that fucker stomping around loudly but I couldn't see him. I was like "where the fuck is he?" Suddenly he drops down right behind me and I'm dead before I can even react. I was "damn... you got me good, bro"

Back then janky controls were the norm so we were used to it. These days modern controls are so smooth and refined it is hard to play some old games. I don't know how I ever played medal of honor on the ps1 dual stick controls for fps games has ruined all those old n64 and ps1 fps games.

Honestly I don't the controls are THAT bad. They could be better, but it's still serviceable.

I remember spending half the day trying to get that stupid debug menu to come up... If I remember right you had to make some save file with the name Wampa or WampaStompa in it, then find a way to depress all the buttons on the control and put the joystick in a certain position and wait several minutes.

I think I spent more time trying to figure it all out than I actually spent screwing around with it lol.

the stuff you unlock by getting Challenge Points are more easter eggs than bona fide cheats

like the Jedi-level "cheat" stops wampas from attacking you, and they only appear in 2 stages...>_>

You can hold R to strafe though, so it's not completely horrible, but you can't circle strafe.

the game desperately needed a Zelda-style lock on feature
there *is* a way to enable a fixed view, but it's too bothersome to actually use

Gall Spaceport was the best stage for that very reason. It was fucking massive AND you got a kickass jetpack that was fun to use. Also, Boba Fett.

Man, being a 10 y/o kid playing it for the first time... there was nothing else like it back then
