This game flew under my radar, but quite interested to know how it compares to previous titles in the kirby franchise.

Kirby's Dreamland 3
Kirby Super Star
Kirby's Adventure
...
Other older kirby games?

worth getting into my collection?

It's different, and some long-standing fans of the series weren't a fan of it, but I'd say it's well worth playing. I really wish the power combination thing would make a comeback, since it was really just plain fun to play around with.

I think it's fantastic and a top ten game on the N64 but feels more like a spin-off since it uses a different system for its copy abilities where you can use double of the same ability for or mix and match for a ton of variety and replay-ability.

People like to bitch about how slow it feels but they're too used to mobile games I guess.

I feel like it's getting a bit more overshadowed, as the franchise continues. For instance you would be better off playing either of the 3DS games. Also, it definitely does not compare to Kirby Super Star. It doesn't even have co-op.

But Kirby 64 is still pretty good! It's basically Dreamland 4, right down to the re-appearance of Dark Matter, and a cameo of the animal buddies. It has a unique fusion system for the copy abilities which has never been replicated by the later games. The fun in this entry comes from trying out all the different combinations, and figuring out which crystal shard needs that combination.

The gameplay is slower than other Kirby games. The level design is a bit on the bland side. It's also not that hard, which could be a turn off to some. But the graphic style catches your eye, and avoids a lot of the typical N64 crust. The soundtrack is unforgettable, and has many songs I still listen to, currently. I also can not recommend the minigames enough! The N64 was the best for 4-player party games, and Kirby 64 was no exception.

I definitely recommend giving it a shot. If you can track down the Kirby Anniversary collection on the Wii, that's a great way to play it, along with other great games. It was on the Wii U VC as well, but I don't that's up and running anymore.

Crystal Shards had the interesting concept of combining abilities to create new abilities, but it was very poorly executed.

They came up with the ideas of what abilities become when you combined them, but put very little thought into if those combo abilities where fun to use or useful..

The result was a large majority of the combo abilities where terrible, many of them an actual hinderance to use, however, because you needed specific ability combos to unlock certain areas and collectables, you are forced to bring a terrible combo ability into a level to try and reach that section where that specific combo was necessary.

Most of the ability combos were also very, very simple mechanically. A lot of them had only 1 or 2 attacks

I would very much like to see the ability combo thing done again, but this time actual thought put into making the combo abilities fun and useful.
