ARDMORE, Pennsylvania -- Mask can be a four-letter word when it appears on a restaurant receipt, instead of a 20% tip.

That's what happened at John Henry's Pub in Pennsylvania on Sunday. The server was understandably frustrated.

"I was just surprised. I was shocked," said Jamie Ledwith.

She explains there was no heated exchange beforehand.

"When they came in they walked through the bar without their mask on. So I asked them politely, 'If you're walking through the bar, or standing, just put your mask on until you're seated,'" said Ledwith.

Ledwith told her boss what happened when she opened the bill.

Kathy Kearney, who's owned the pub for 15 years, posted the receipt to Facebook.

"The reactions and comments started immediately flooding and I think there was one negative versus hundreds of positives comments," said Kearney.

In turn, people started to step up, and show support.

"Somebody did leave me a card under the door with a little bit of money in it and their kids signed the card. That was super sweet," said Ledwith.

In general, there's no issue with mask enforcement at all at John Henry's Pub, Kearney said. The goal: a safe and comfortable dining experience.

"It has been amazing, really amazing. You know what, I also want to give people a pass. This guy was probably just having a bad day. And that's okay, we all are going to have bad days. It's been a long seven months," said Kearney.

Both women say they really enjoy working again. Jamie was out of work for six months because of the pandemic.

They whole-heartedly thank everyone who has supported this small, family-run business.

This makes news? Lots of people don't tip because of a comment or negative experience at a restaurant. It happens every day in every city.

If you cannot/will not tip in America (I know it's different elsewhere) Cook at home and fuck off. You thinking "I'm taking a stand against this so we can be better" is as obtuse as thinking "By posting this political rant on FB/Insta/Twitter, I'll sway people to my mindset". Tip; even if the service is shitty; you have NO IDEA why; Yea, maybe they are a shit server; sure. BUT maybe their child/mom/dad died that same day but they still had to come into work and serve your selfish ass because no one else would cover their shift. America sucks ass for the working class compared to the rest of the country (we are far above a lot of countries; I get that but lets not deflect).

I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Everyone is fighting and internal battle we cannot fathom; don't judge people to harshly over a single occurrence; you don't know what brought that on. Same can be said for the customer; be they acted out of emotion rather than logic.

You usually have to anyway, if they don't get enough tips.

I've written messages to wait staff on receipts but I always tip them, too. I think the most passive-aggressive one I wrote was a suggestion to not skip Tom Petty songs (I don't even remember what song it was, but it came on over the stereo system and then they changed it >_>). Still gave them a good 30% tip or w/e but yeah.

not exactly what i meant. give them $8 plus tips instead of $3 plus tips. but still, let them keep their tips.

edit: or $10 or $15. i'm not in that industry. i'm not sure what their base pay should actually be. the number isn't important to the argument.

Not Tipping is a dumb thing to be outraged about. You have a system where people have no obligation to pay extra money then you go slack jawed when people don't pay the money. The solution is obvious: pay them a real wage by making gratuity a pre-programmed part of the bill. "Wah but then they won't work as hard" they're food servers, not fucking palace servants. You're not royalty or bourgeois you're working class, you're not entitled to be waited on like a king at Texas Roadhouse.

True but the subject matter counts - if somebody walked in smoking a cigarette would you find both equally at fault?

I argue otherwise. I think everyone should get salaries, but at the same time, tips shouldn't be shunned. I know at my retail store they actively told us to not accept tips from customers, and if we did, we were to report the tip and put it in the donation jar.

Some people like to tip, they like good service. I'm not saying it needs to be mandatory, but it shouldn't be a big deal like some companies make it out to be. If I am buying an expensive heavy bbq and 3 people help me put it in my vehicle, then I should be allowed to tip them 5 dollars each. Same with putting groceries in someones car. Shouldn't be a mandatory tip, or an expected tip, just not a shunned tip.

I'll tell you what needs to die though. This idea that cashiers in North America aren't allowed to have seats while they are working. Working for 8 hours a day on a concrete floor is hard enough, but add that your not allowed to sit down/lean? it will wreck your back. Christ I had one girl who was helping me near the entrance. She broke her leg the day before. All she had to do was be near the door and take attendance of the amount of people going in and out of the store. Meanwhile our manager tells her that she isn't allowed to sit down at all during her shift, only when she is on her breaks. I'm not management, but I overruled it. Not going to allow that bs to happen while I'm working my shift. She quit 3 days later.

It's a slow news day when crap barely worthy of local news is on mainstream news outlets radar.

Yeah, but how she did say it? Did she use those exact words? Did she wag her finger at them? People tip based on their experiences like this. I mean, obviously the people should have wore their masks, but I'm looking at this from a customer experience perspective. I'm 100% pro tipping, but I also believe tips should always be earned, and if they aren't then the server should try and recall how everything went and try to pinpoint things they could have improved upon, even if they already did a good job.

Aldi has been sticking cashiers in chairs essentially forever. Doesn't seem to affect the business too much.

Breaking news. Today a restaurant server didn't get tipped because she told a customer they had to wear a mask. In order to get a fair report on what took place, our news team interviewed the server, and only the server, to give us a completely unbiased account of the events as they unfolded.

Server: "I did nothing wrong at all. I was being super nice and friendly. And then he wrote 'mask' instead of giving me a tip on the credit card receipt. The man was having a bad day, and he took it out on poor ol' me.:

There you have it, folks. A man is having a bad day, goes out to eat, and then doesn't tip his server.

Also, I find it very unprofessional that restaurant employees would share information about how much their customers tipped them with the media. Not a good look.

That's what Embrace means by the tipping culture needing to die. You guys are on the same page. No one should feel entitled to a tip as it defeats the original intention of tipping.
