I went with a life cleric, since I figured the cap is 4 anyway, you can't get an extra attack from fighter levels.

I went with wood elf cleric with 16 dex/16 wisdom 14 con/10 str/10 cha/8 int (i'm dumb).

I can't get con to 16 anyway (or I would have gone 16 con/14 wisdom), but this gives me the max AC (of any starting char) with Shield of faith going. Max bonus to attack and damage (with bows/shortsword at least).

I have stealth proficency from wood elf (with max bonus to it from dex along with the cantrip to boost it as well).

Acrobatics and perception proficiencies as well (figure perception will help alot, with max wis bonus since there are hidden things to find).

I went life even though I have max bonus to spells to hit (so light would make sense for AoE burning hands etc), because life gives +3 healing to healing word (bonus action 1d4+3 health now), so I can heal even while still fighting.

With a short sword + shield I do 1d6+3 damage, have +5 to hit, and with studded leather 18 base ac (20 with SoF).

Thats my starting char, I wanna play a fighter as well but gonna hold off till I play through with the cleric first (even without 5th level extra attack fighter gets second wind, adrenaline burst, a specialization etc.

Forgotten realms in fact.

1 and 2 came out eons ago, they are quite fun.

BG 3 is just getting released as early access with a level cap of 4 for now, and only a few classes available, but eventually they are all supposed to be released. Word is there may be a level cap of 10 for the main game (which if you play 5e you know 10 is actually fairly high), but they may expand on that later with DLC etc.

Yeah I'd focus on dex/con on a wizard tbh, though you can still hit a 16 int I think with one of the races (half elf for sure, or human.

I think with human you can hit 16 dex/16 con/14 int if you want, and since you hit level 2 really fast, that is about an extra 6 hp right off the bat for your wizard..which would help a bunch.

The 5% lesser chance for spells to actually hit (which is already freaking too low most of the time), isn't really that big of a deal. Main prob is you really want a race that gives you bow usage as well, since sadly with a 16 dex, a bow is better damage (with a higher chance to deal it) than most of the wizard spells (and def better than the cantrips).

A wood elf gets +2 dex which makes a 16 dex very cheap, lets you get 14 con and 14 int, with points left over for cha if you wanna up persuasion a bit.

But yeah, wizards just are not bringing much to the table, a cleric is better in every way, even if you cheat and scribe guided bolt into your wizard spell list (lol it's bugged right now, you can scribe ANY scroll into your spell list as a wizard). Sad when the best spell by far a wizard can cast is actually a cleric spell.

Guided bolt + 16 dex + race that lets the wizard use a longbow is probably the best way to play one right now...but ...at that point why wouldn't you just be a cleric?
