Xena and Gabrielle finally got crucified and died (??) on that snowy mountain, and now we're in some present-day setting where a housewife believes she's Xena's reincarnation.

Oh, and Caesar and Ephiny died.

I'm not sure if this is a sneaky way of doing recaps/clips to catch people up or just something silly. "Xena" is married to Joxer in present day, so it's probably a joke. Salmoneus is a sleazy dude, too, so it's tolerable.

Not sure if I should watch Hercules after this or do something different.

I used to love the series, as a kid, but it got really weird as it went on.

I also had a big crush on Callisto.

I heard the ratings for the show were pretty steady throughout its lifespan, so I wonder if there's really a marked decline. The show's wrapped up a lot of its "mytharc" stuff like feuding with Ares, Gabrielle's daughter, the umpteenth Callisto appearance, Caesar's saga, Alti's evil shamanism, etc. I guess Eli's stuff is still around, but I have to wonder where they'll go from here.

I also had a big crush on Callisto.
She's adorable, in a psycho way.

The sillier episodes tend to be some of the worst, but they're an okay palate cleanser. When they're really good, though -- like that Producers parody -- they rank up there with the best of 'em. It's kinda like how X-Files had some really good comedy episodes that stand proudly with the most enjoyable serious ones. Joxer and Autolycus' presence tends to tip things towards good instead of bad, luckily.

Yea the comedic episodes are hit or miss. Sometimes theyre just too much, but if you know how the cast and writers are, theyre huge goofballs.

IMO seasons 5 and 6 are weaker than the first 4, but still great with some strong arcs. Id say the series strongest selling point was the relationship between X and G, how it develops organically over time, and everything they go through that shapes them as characters & friends (then later as romantic partners).

D'awww, Angel Callisto got to reunite with her family. Some of the other heaven-vs.-hell stuff was kinda cheesy, and the CGI looked like crap you'd see on Encarta 20 years ago, but that part was nice.

I guess Xena's chakram is a mystical object or something? I don't think it was ever stated as such in this series, but maybe it's known in Hercules' episodes. It's odd how it broke when it hit Xena's spine and messed her back up, though. I guess coming back to life healed all those nasty crucifixion wounds, too.

The underworld is part of the mythology, though, so even if they die (like Alti), they may just come back multiple times anyway. Callisto ascended to heaven, but I wouldn't doubt if she came back anyway. Then again, Christian mythology is the one they seem to be tiptoeing around (not referring to god/devil by name, etc.)

yeah she the sais were meant to show the change in gabrielle
she used a bo staff for so long because she didnt want to use lethal force against even her enemies. so her bo staff was used to defeat opponents without killing them
as the series went on and she became more willing to kill her enemies she switched to sais as her weapon of choice

Yeah, I figured it was something like that. I don't remember there ever being a "well, I'm going to murder people now" moment, but we're pretty far past the "I don't want Gabrielle to stain her hands with blood!!!!" part, too. I don't mind the weapon change -- it's just a little jarring since she's constantly trying the diplomatic approach and stuff.

I look forward to seeing what she names her kid.

On a separate note, it's weird that, throughout all the "I'm pregnant!!" episodes, she hasn't even mentioned her dead kid once. You know, the boy left with the centaurs and who was poisoned by Gabrielle's demon-teenager. You'd think there'd be at least a few comparisons or a name drop in there.

The shark was completely obliterated once Xena had not one, not two, but three identical look-alikes. Also 2nd Xena musical was miles better than the 1st IMO.

LLHoF was a great episode for queer positivity. The show has always been pro-LGBT but I'm glad they included this arc to incorporate some other characters, like Joxer, into the conversation.

Yeah, having Joxer get in on some of the show's issues, instead of just being the class clown, was nice. IIRC, they didn't come out and say Jace was gay or anything, so when Joxer seemed disappointed in him, some could play it off as "well, he's from a family of warriors and he's not a warrior!" type of deal.

And yeah, this musical was generally better than the first. They were mostly covers, though, so I gotta say that the best musical song is still in the first:

There are so many lookalike episodes, I wasn't really counting them. I mean, Xena had several (princess, tramp, priestess), Joxer has his two brothers, Gabrielle's demon-daughter took her form... I'm glad they ditched the Xena lookalike episodes, 'cause those were always the most lame and contrived ones, but the Joxer ones are kinda enjoyable.

Joxer the Tidy
Always plays inside-y
Never hurts the other boys
Even when they take his toys!

Aside from that cameo and Xena (and the Hercules movie-prequels), I haven't seen him in anything... and that disappoints me. I'm actually surprised he wasn't in more Sam Raimi stuff, considering Ted Raimi has been in several things, Bruce Campbell obviously is Ash and Renee (can't remember her last name, but Gabrielle's actress) was in a Darkman sequel.

It's weird seeing Hera be a "good guy" in Xena. I could've sworn she was a big antagonist throughout the regular Herc episodes, making trouble, creating obstacles, etc. I'm sure Ares' role in Xena has similar functions, although not as frequent.

EDIT: Damn, Herc stabbed Zeus and killed 'im!

EDIT: Now Xena threw a dirty diaper at an attacker's face!

Damn, Xena and Ares almost did the nasty in the pasty to secure an alliance. I knew when Xena walked onto that battlefield with Eve, it was going to be a ploy. Ares taking the swaddling cloth off to see it was a puppet was pretty funny, even if it was such an obvious joke.

Also, it's odd how it's been five seasons and they haven't updated the show's intro. It's still showing stuff like Gabrielle and the Cyclops and Xena sneaking into Draco's chamber. Thought they'd have switched things up a bit, considering all the CGI monstrosities they've spent money on.

PS: "Baby back ribs are not baby food, Joxer!"
PSS: "Well, if it isn't the ever-tittilating Aphrodite. I almost didn't recognize you with your legs so close together!"
PSSS: Aphrodite is seriously one of the best gods. I hope she doesn't get drawn into the war somehow. =(
