Wow, that 25-year timeskip came out of nowhere. Eve is now grown and a Roman general, corrupted by Ares, and after meeting her, she's now out pillaging and murdering like old Xena would.
I did get a kick out of Xena waking up from her cryocave and asking for Ares, only for a peasant to say he hasn't been seen in "these parts in twenty-five years!" That was never a problem before, but apparently Eve living have switched pleas and paeans over to spotty wifi rules. (Even weirder, she finds Ares later using this exact method.) On the fifth season now. I'm a little astonished at the way some of the older characters were written off. Gabrielle's parents and Lila's husband were all beheaded (off-screened) and her niece was sold into slavery; Xena's mom was tormented by Mephistopheles and burned at the stake. Yeah, Ares is great. I mean...he still wanted to be a slave-owning plantation dude, but compared to his earlier bloodlust, he's slightly more reformed. Without Xena around to pull on his leash, though, who knows what would happen to him.
Another ep I watched this morning was a parody of "The Most Dangerous Game," where some Amazon trapper is hunting people. He had a triangular boomerang thing to counteract Xena's chakram and had all these traps laid. It wasnt worth hurting those villagers to escape and she was guilty of far worse things from her past hooves and harlots -meet ephiny and gabby gets initiated into the Amazons. Its funny how ephiny had zero patience for gabby at first. The path not taken- we get to meet some of xenas old colleagues, one of whom struggled with the same thing Xena did. Wow, two great eps back to back.
First, the Caligula episode, where Archangel Michael tasks Xena with killing the emperor who's siphoning Aphrodite's powers to become a god himself. It's been a long time since we saw Aphrodite, so it's good to see her again, even if she's lethargic from losing her powers (which ends up happening). Caligula -- played by Alexis Arquette -- steals the show, though, and is campy, fun, and hedonistic. In fact, he only dies when Xena tricks him into killing himself! Next is "You Are There," a comedy episode spoofing investigative journalism. Iolaus (not playing himself) is a smarmy reporter pushing all kinds of stupid agendas as Xena goes about her plotline of getting Odin's golden apples to attain godhood. At the end, she gives apples to Ares and Aphrodite, restoring their powers. While it's odd that there's canonicity in a comedy episode, there's a ton of funny parts, from Iolaus making Eve the "messenger of peace" go into an expletive-fueled rant and interviews with Charon and Caligula in the underworld. I usually can't stand comedy episodes (I also hated most X-Files eps in this vein), but this was rewarding enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Ac_butY3Q Alexis Arquette died a few years ago, so that's another homie to pour one out for. --- Take me down from the ridge where the summer ends And watch the city spread out just like a jet's flame ...
