On the subject of "game dominance" by contest, this is something I'd been thinking about for a while. So I crunched the numbers for contests 1 through 21 looking which game had the most characters:
(1) at the beginning;
(2) at the top 20 mark; and
(3) represented the greatest percentage of the remaining field, with a minimum of 2 characters (so excludes the obvious 50/50 finals and 33/33/33 final 3).

So for example, contest II had the all-X finals so 100%; and contest VII had 2 of the final 3 being FFIX characters. The rest are outside the top 3.



Let me know if you have any questions or there's something you'd like to see on a future "bonus stats" day.

Also don't forget, after Day 86 I'll be making a request that leads to the most fun stats of all... so don't miss that!

You know I was going to point that out but I saw it like, 40 minutes after I posted it.

Everything I did was based on GMUN's stats site and the Tactics games were collectively grouped together.

If you disregard that then it's FFVI (3 of the final 9 for 33.3% of the field)

Always love the stats, Martin. Thanks for giving us something to pore over on non-stats elim days. VII is now 37.5% of the field this time and could keep growing...

It's interesting how different the last column is from the top 20 column, which is surprisingly (?) dominated by VI and (unsurprisingly) VII. I guess that means VII is very good at flooding the field up to top 20 (9 times including this contest!) but not so good at keeping that percentage high by the end (3 times). Fits with what you've said about the game's strength, though unless Celes+Kefka or Seymour+Tidus (pls!) have very deep runs, VII wins that again this year.

Also surprised VIII actually managed to have largest overall rep once, and that Squall wasn't even among the top two reps when that happened. That year had Zell, Laguna, Squall and... Fujin reach the top 20. What different days those must have been!

You know thinking more about it, I guess maybe it wasn't that different. Aside from Zell randomly being a powerhouse, there's a lot of the same players high up in that contest and Fujin I guess you could parallel to Leblanc this time. A Zell/Yuffie final still seems absurd to me but Yuffie's here in the final 16 again now and I guess it's no weirder than Fang/Cid.

I don't think it's that crazy, she has KH exposure and I think certain people love the cast in FF7 regardless

Yeah I see people love her though I never got it myself, just surprised I guess that she has made it to the final where the likes of Aeris, Vincent, Red, Barret, Sephiroth etc haven't. I admit I also forgot/hadn't noticed that Tifa has made it to the final before and it seemed even weirder for Yuffie of all playables to be so strong.
