Unprecedented situation. Sitting president dies weeks from elections due to a virus that is devastating the world.

Would the election go on but with Pence as the ticket? What would happen to all the early ballots that were already cast? Would they be given to Pence instead? Would the elections be suspended to a later date to allow the Republican party time to prepare Pence and a new running mate?

Let's go one step further, what if Trump some how infected Biden at the debates? He wouldn't test positive right away so it's still possible. If both Biden and Trump end up severely compromised or killed by the virus before election day, what would happen?

I wonder if they already have a contingency plan for that exact scenario.

If it were Biden Republicans would say push on with the election, since it's Trump they'll probably find excuses to delay it.

Republicans would come up with a reason why it should be delayed, and democrats are wimps so yeah if that happened it would probably be delayed.

No. Pence would be the GOP nominee and Trump/Pence votes already cast would go to him as he was already on the ballot. The question of who his Veep would be if reelected would likely be up for a post EC-vote Senate confirmation.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Also for the record if it was delayed that wouldn't make Pence president indefinitely

it would make Pelosi president once the term is ip president until an election is held

General election requires congressional approval in order to delay it.

Yes they can. It just has to be voted on by the House, and there is no way they are doing that unless Trump, Pence, Biden, and Harris all get Covid and/or die within the next few weeks.

So you think if even Trump and Biden died before election day due to covid, they wouldn't delay the elections?

If they were both still healthy then no. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a bit of a clusterfuck, but as long as there are two healthy candidates who were already on the ballot then the election would still be held.

they can be, it just has to be done from congress. Which means getting the democratic controlled house to agree to a delay that benefits them absolutely none.

The only thing republican's could offer is delaying the justice nom. Which I doubt they would even offer.

I mean constitutionally they can't. Congress can of course overturn this, but the House would not do this except if literally ever candidate and veep is dead.
