A 38-year-old Sainte-Thrse man is expected to appear in court in Laval Thursday in connection with an assault on a female bus driver apparently sparked by the mandatory wearing of face masks on public transit. According to witnesses, the suspect boarded the bus with a female companion and was told by the driver he had to wear a mask to remain in the vehicle. The suspect pulled a bandana over his face and then took a seat on the bus. During the ride, the driver noticed the suspect had pulled down the bandana and reminded him to keep it on. Police say that at the next stop the suspect walked to the front of the bus, opened the plexiglass barrier separating the driver from the passengers and punched the 55-year-old woman in the face. The impact was such that the bones in her face were fractured. The suspect fled the bus from its front entrance while his companion left from the rear, police said. Acting on tips from the public, police tracked down the suspect and arrested him on Wednesday. He is expected to face a charge of assault causing injury.
