There were a few promising candidates, but they got weeded out earlier in the race and Biden had the strongest record anyway. There's also the sub-issue that Bernie's primary base are people who don't come out to the polls anyway (which is part of the reason he lost in the first place), whereas Biden is more able to bring some people to the polls who Bernie wouldn't.
