Yang was on the podcast talking about how much of a stereotype Hung was and gave Asians a bad name. Yang and Rogan then agreed that he was mentally handicap, on the spectrum or something of that nature, and that's why Hung was able to be taken advantage of.

Is it harsh? Sure. They're definitely talking like he's never gonna see this.

Are they wrong? Not really. Like they said, american idol producers chose to feature his audition for a reason. And the public collectively laughed at and mocked this guy relentlessly.

I'm sure his fame has somewhat worked in his favor, that doesn't make that behaviour anymore justified or okay. It's fucking gross and mean spirited

Yang is probably right to find the script disrespectful and see the biopic just being a recirculation of making Hung a target to laugh at.

But that conversation dwelling into Hung's intellectual capacitance and postulated handicap (and that was driven more by Rogan) was uncalled for. I get Rogan's point was to shed light on how American Idol was being exploitive, though. That conversation could've been better-phrased, because if anyone "set Asians back 10 years", it was American Idol, not Hung.

Yang was probably also indulging in the resentment that he wasn't offered the role of a more prominent Asian figure. There is a bit of self-ceremony here with him going out of his way to talk about this that is hard to explain as it sounds like a particular generalization, but if you know what I'm talking about....

I recommend that TEDtalk video he did. It goes over his life before and after his viral fame.

He's been through other jobs where he's tried to avoid the American Idol stereotypes, and each decision he's made has been whether to play into a stereotype of a bumbling, tone-deaf joke, or whether he should let the dregs of his past dissuade him from pursuing career paths where his mettle and the quality of his work speaks for himself.

William Hung didn't get famous by exploiting racial aspects that racists apply to his race, or to a broader stereotype beyond his race. He appeared on American Idol after receiving positive feedback on his performance at a party, and every job he took after his initial fame was an attempt to apply his skills and his intristic human worth to a cause above his own ego.

This is ultimately what he's best-known for, so he does make broader public appearances under a moniker that people know him for. But he's talked about his fame and impact, and he's ultimately one person who got famous for being himself, and who's worked hard to get to a place of comfort or visibility. I don't think that's worth the sort of backlash he's received - he's shown himself to be nothing but humble, kind and self-aware.

I agree with everything William said except for trying something new without being judge. Just because it's something new doesn't mean jack shit and everyone should have the foresight of knowing if what they're trying out is factually a good thing or not.

I also understand where Jimmy is coming from but I disagree with him. William did something that made lots of people thought he's a joke however you have to understand intent here and what William is doing to help himself from this. Don't think it's fair to label William as someone who destroyed the Asian image when everyone needs a stepping stone.

And I'm not surprised about what Joe said at all.

For the record, While i feel like Jimmy could have been nicer about it, and while I feel William is a nice genuine guy...I don't blame Jimmy for being upset. William allowed himself and his culture to be paraded around as a joke for personal gain. Stuff like that makes it incredibly difficult for people like Jimmy who aren't caricatures of their culture to get a foot hold in the industry. If they're not acting like William they're not wanted and it takes so much to overcome that. Its the same idea that went into "Whats wrong with Apu", except in this case it was being perpetrated by someone of his own background. Granted, William was being taken advantage of and the blame should fall on American Idol and whatever record company capitalized on it afterwards, but still...I understand the frustration.

Yea, its not his fault. But he should have known that it wasn't just because he was a bad singer. There are plenty that came out of American idol. He gained notoriety because "the funny minority with an accent does funny song and dance" which says more about our culture than it does William. I understand the frustration, the hate was just misplaced.

How do you know that he was famous because he's Asian or a minority? Stop projecting your beliefs onto others. American Idol was a popular show at the time and there were a lot of bad singers of all colors. He just turned out to be the most famous one.
