Beat him right after. Looks like I triggered enemy handicap... might have to do this mission over now. Any way to turn that off?

I got a "enemy handicap" penalty:

Looks like if you continue a few times they make it easier for the rest of the mission for some reason.

Huh, never experienced that. Is that for using gold orbs? I think I used one or two of them in my devil hunter mode playthrough.

Nope, for continues. Apparently DMC3 secretly did this as well, so when I beat the final boss is was probably an easier version of it.

For reference I beat this boss in my 3rd or 4th continue, and I'm pretty sure it was basically when the handicap kicked in. Lame.

The game has non-gold orb continues? Lol, sorry for asking.

I remember one time I died and I was like "fuck using a gold orb" so I chose the continue option the game gave me and it just restarted the mission.

Made me so mad I ragequit for a day or so.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure only DMC1 does that. You can normal continue in 3, but all your style points for the mission reset. Oh well, I guess if I ever grind high ranks in missions I won't be continuing anyway.

Edit: for 3 it depends on if you're in yellow or gold mode. Yellow means gold orbs let you continue, in gold mode the orbs revive you on the spot.

Decided to get a platinum in Bayonetta tonight (normal) and I noticed some skills from playing DMC have transferred over. Specifically using moves which use targeting + directional inputs (they're more fundamental in DMC so learned them there), switching weapons mid combo, and generally going for more style and building combo score. Just barely managed to platinum chapter 2 with 5 golds and 5 platinums.

Beat mission 5. Literally left the castle thinking they'd block me off if I want supposed to lol. Ended up double checking online and it turns out I was supposed to go the other way in the first room smh. I know halfway through the game I switch to Dante, and honestly I think it would have been pretty nice if you were switching back and forth throughout the game.

Decided to do a mission before bed, so I just finished mission 7. It's the one with the plant snake boss. Knowing that I go backwards through the game as Dante, it's funny to watch all these demons get away and thinking "see you as Dante!" Anyway this boss was way easier than the frog, but I think that's because I can rack up damage with DT now. First mission I've gotten S rank in the whole series so far I'm pretty sure (actually, got S rank in one of the swimming levels in 1 but that doesn't count lol). Most an A/B kind of player.

I will say that while I'm enjoying the game, I'm definitely not liking it as much as 3. There's something with the pace of enemy design that's slower or something. Nothing is egregiously bad like 2 so I'm not sure what it is yet. One probable factor though is the single weapon Nero has. I like to switch weapons really often. I know I'm 5 Nero had the devil breakers to mix things up, which sounds kinda like exactly what he needs.

After I beat this game I'll either get 5 or play Vergil mode in 3. Not sure yet... and I'm not sure if I'm very interested in revisiting 1. But 3 is very playable so I'll be back in there I think.

The game really does Nero dirty in not giving him satisfying defeats of the bosses because you have to fight them again as Dante.

Of course, it also does Dante dirty by just giving him pointless repeats.

I do like Nero's gameplay and I think the fact that he has no weapon switching makes it more tight in its design regarding the enemies. But it does also kind of grow stale that you can't just go crazy and the solution to most enemies is the Buster button.

I'm a big fan of switching between 2 weapons mid combo for those easy style points. I'm probably better at pulling out Nero's sword combos than I was for any previous weapon though, so there's something to be said for that.

And of course, I don't have the max act upgrade (expensive) which adds a dimension to his gameplay. Then 5 has devil breakers in the mix.

Oh, dude, if you haven't even played as Vergil in 3 don't even bother with 4. 4, even with Vergil, is just so meh.

V is good but, man, I felt like 4 just dragged.

When Credo throws his lance at you, you can actually catch it with the buster and throw it back. The timing is strict but it's super sick. Nero has a bunch of hidden buster moves like that.

Yeah, I got one by accident in the first fight and got somewhat consistent at it in the last fight might have saved me a cycle for all I know.

But this boss fight has cemented a certain feeling of "slowness" to the enemy encounters compared to 3. We'll see if this extends to Dante, but I think it has more to do with enemy design.

Calling it at one chapter again, pretty tired today so it's hard to focus lol. I'm getting the hang of rolling in this series though. This is the first game where I've really used it.

Was it the Alto and Bianco Angelo group?

There's an attack where the Alto commands the Biancos to group up and they shoot a sphere of energy at you, and you can knock it back with a charged shot, buster, and several other moves. Always gives you SSS and almost always kills all of them. Altos can sometimes survive with very little health.

Oh by the way have you tried to taunt while sprinting as Nero?

Yup that sounds like what happened. I just charged a shot to get some damage since they ran to the other side of the stage lol. And I'll try that next mission.

Just fought Agnus. Pretty easy boss, got another S rank which is nice. I realized you can activate DT during those big boss grab animations for some extra damage. But Nero is not happy rn lol. I think I switch to Dante pretty soon as well.

There's an easy way to cheese Dante if you want it.

Stand on top of the bed and just hit him with Buster when he jumps up after you. You can loop him that way

I recommend fighting him the regular way the first time though of course.

Took a lunch break. If the goal here was to show that Dante is just a better character/ fighter through gameplay, I'd say they succeeded. The fact that Dante has armor in basically all his combos doesn't match my expectations compared to how fast he is. Seems like one of those fights that will make most players go to safe, slow, campy strategy naturally unless they look up how to fight him online.

Feels like one of those fights that says "hey you know all those options you were using in every other fight in the game? Sorry he hard counters all of then except X and Y. You'll beat it once you find X and Y via trial and error."

Might be wrong on that, I'll let you know when I'm done with it.

Yeah, beat him by jumping around and trying to punish whiffs. When that actually happened, get a couple hits then hit circle for + go DT for big damage. Repeat until boss was over (3 circle presses total).

Not a fan, felt like a cheese boss.
