In a way, being able to post anonymously without people going through your comment history like on Reddit. And also being able to troll a little bit and have fun.

People go through other people's post history all the time here.

You're making a good argument for open posting histories.

At least on a board by board basis. (by posting on CE, people can see only your CE history. By posting on the PS4 forum, people can just see your PS4 history. etc)

gamefaqs is more pseudonymous than anonymous, but as far as pseudonymous forum culture goes, SA is (or was, anyway, not sure how relevant it still is) another major player.

iirc accounts cost money, banning is rather frequent (presumably to make money off of returning users), and the users are said to be quite mean (which my experiences with them in my irc days somewhat corroborates).

meanwhile, 4ch is totally anonymous (through some boards have pseudonymous threads, presumably due to sameposting issues).

due to the fact that moderation is extremely relaxed (basically only off-topic posting, illegal activities, spam, harassment, nsfw/nsfl content on certain boards, and a few unwritten forbidden topics of discussion are moderated), there's a very sophisticated trolling culture.

Those aren't even "forums" so they are terrible for discussion.

Yeah that sounds about right. My stalker(s) have probably seen this thread but are too afraid to post lol. But even if they did post and they didn't show their stalkerish behaviour I don't think I'd even recognise them

That's why I don't block them, it gives me a chuckle when I can spot them

Depending on what you define as trolling, SomethingAwful is the only other option.

It's still bigger, way more varied, and more active than social boards here are, there are just less active accounts altogether (but it's not like people come to these forums for every XxdarkvegetaxX's opinion).

iirc accounts cost money, banning is rather frequent (presumably to make money off of returning users),

Banning is a lot less frequent than it used to be, back when Loxtax would ban random users for a laugh. Now the only thing that really gets you banned is - phobia, and even then it's still up to a
board's culture and designated mods to enforce that, which has been notoriously lax on at least one board.

and the users are said to be quite mean (which my experiences with them in my irc days somewhat corroborates).

This is another way I think the site has chilled out over the years. It's not perfect, most users are still abrasive on certain topics, but they can also be quite knowledgeable about any topic under the sun.

Also this isn't a forum, but tumblr's atmosphere is more like the wild west internet than even current GameFAQs. Moderation is so lax as to be nonexistent. Somewhere, money is regularly changed hands to keep the lights on, but the whole vibe is that of a website only kept alive because the corporation that owns it has completely forgotten about it. The most perfect description I've seen of it is "abandoned clown factory."

The main thing that bugs me about these forums is that there is a shortage of hyped people. Like people talking about a new game, or a potential girlfriend, or some project or ambition they have seems to be more rare than it used to be and I don't know where those people went or why current people aren't like that as much.

I want a place exactly like this but with more exuberant people. But maybe in 2020 nobody is like that anymore, idk.

Lowtax might need to try to milk some of those resubs, now that he is going through a messy divorce.

You are describing SA. Feels like everyone who posts there has some weird interest they're happy to share, from let's plays to guns to drugs etc. Even the absolute failures known as goon projects always involve passion.

I think he lost two thirds of his patreon subs the day after this newest one came out, and now he's handing over SA. I predict he will fall down the chud rabbit hole since he's already done at least one interview with a far right podcaster, and we know he has no job skills lol.

I might check out SA again.

Last time I was there was many years ago and I got criticized because they had weird cultural norms I completely did not understand.
