The subject has come up, what with new title out and all, and so people voice things on said subject. It's not that people suddenly decided to dislike Mario 64, you're just hearing this all at once.

I remember thinking 64 DS was great, even 8 or so years after the original. Haven't touched it on Switch yet, though.

Yeah, it is what it is. what a surprise that decade old games are a bitch to play with modern controls, especially when those controls are implemented so poorly, I can't imagine what a fucking pain it is to play Sunshine with Joycons when they suffer so often from the drift especially in the F.L.U.D.D-less areas where the slightest misstep will send you plummeting into the bottomless pits.

N64 has aged horribly. Thats why. The camera, the controls, the graphics. None of it is good. It was an important system, but it was a stepping stone. The Atari 2600 aged better than the N64.

Lots of the levels are just "look Ma I'm moving in the 3D axis!" They're very basic by modern standards. Speaking as a zoomer.

I'd agree with that statement were you talking about SMB 2 or 3, but not SMB 1. It's still a good game, but it has aged poorly.

Crash Bandicoot came out a few months later (actually before SM64 in the US) and is amazing today.

Crash isn't comparable to Mario 64 at all. Crash was essentially a 2D game in 3D.

If you're gonna rerelease an old game, you touch it up so it's more acceptable by today's standards. Nintendo didn't even try here.

Naw, the original Bandicoot and Spyro are trash by today's standards. They were just touched up for their PS4 rerelease, iirc.

Also how poorly the game has aged may depend on your enjoyment of collectathons in general. I had fun with the DS version so its not that dated to me, and its still possible to enjoy playing through it despite how barren a lot of stages may look

The same people who didn't care that much for Odyssey probably wouldn't be replaying this

I still enjoy Mario 64 tbh, but I'd still say it aged pretty poorly objectively.

If a game is all you have, then you'll be more willing to forgive obvious flaws.

2D Madden games are just not fun, but they were the best simulation football games of their time. Tecmo Super Bowl has flaws of its own but that game (and series in general) is so much more fun to play than old Madden.

A game like Super Mario Bros 1, though, the only real flaw is that the graphics aren't that good. But that is the best thing to have as your flaw because who really cares.

Super Mario Bros 1 2 3 and World are all very different experiences. Have you played Mario maker? This is like saying Tony Hawk 3 sucks because you can't get off your board and there is a 2 minute time limit.

i get the cultural impact this game had but overall, it's my least favorite 3D Mario game tbh. specially when you got Odyssey!

with that said tho, i still enjoy it. hell i'm playing on 3D All Stars rn. only thing that pisses me off is the camera but besides that, it's still a nice piece of nostalgia!

It does however, in addition to very simplistic level design, make the game basic and boring

Which are core determinants of what makes a game dated. It's not horrendously dated like Zelda 1 but there isn't much incentive to play it now
