favorite recent remake?

for the record, I'm specifically talking about games being remade from the ground up, not just remastered or ported like Super Mario 3D All-Stars

2020 has seen a record number of remakes, with most of them getting really positive reception for upholding the style of the original while adapting them for modern visuals and gameplay.

Do you like the trend and want it to continue, or do you think we're getting bogged down by remakes from people running out of ideas?

the only bad thing about it is the inevitable argument about whether it's a remake, remaster, reboot, or reimagining

It's inevitable as gaming gets older and classics can continue to be made relevant again for current audiences, and more modern classics get made that eventually get old themselves.

I do like the remakes themselves, and there's definitely some games I would love to see remade with newer gameplay (Kirby Air Ride and the original Assassin's Creed come to mind) but ports don't really do all that much for me.

More than any other medium, gaming has a problem with older pieces of media becoming harder to experience as time passes on unless you have emulator experience. So bring on the ports, remakes, whatever.

FF7R did it right by hitting nostalgia while also changing enough to hook those who know the story by heart.

Imagine remaking such a classic game and creating so much discussion

They would have done it more right if there was no discussion because it was perfect. This also probably only works for RPGs too because not many are willing to defend old turn based combat. You can't really reimagine a game down to the gameplay if it was like Zelda or Mario or something.

I kinda want to see more reaaaally old games get completely redone - most often 2D games becoming 3D. The big ones for me are Metal Gear 1/2, because that would be like a completely new thing if you put enough into it.

RE2/3 and FF7 are both decent examples of this though. THPS or DAH wouldn't quite count.

It's fine if they're good, like FF7R and RE2make. Stuff like the Link's Awakening remake bothers me. Some games absolutely deserve to be remade, like Metal Gear 1&2.

Other than the framerate issues, what was so bad about LA?

Skies of Arcadia had a lot going for it, but it really could have used a less aggressive encounter rate.

I really like it, games like FF7 and THPS are great games in their own right, but there's something really cool about seeing the games without the limitations of their original console.

It's fine, although it's occasionally hard not to feel like we're in an infinite cycle of just making the same things over and over again.

I think gaming has reached a good point where we're flush with both original games and welcomed retreads. You could take away every port/remake/whatever released in the last decade and we'd still have so, so many good games to enjoy. The re-releases are like a bonus.

It's fine it's just especially noticeable this year because with covid it's easier just to remake a game then make a new one plus we're at the end of a console generation so they're saving all the new ideas for next gen

||nevermind the ps5 game I'm most looking forward to is demons souls||

I mean, if you remove the stuff that bogs it down like the speed of battles and the encounter rate, like you generally do with remakes, a Skies of Arcadia remake would work out really well.
