A bit of explanation first. I work at a pair of hotels, they share staff and management. Due to Covid, the smaller less profitable one's office was temporarily closed. They routed all of the systems to the larger hotel so we could just operate both from a single space and with less employees.

Well, recently received word that we had to reopen the other office. So, to comply they've been having me open and close it for a single shift. Otherwise, everything is still operated by the larger one.

So, yesterday just before arriving at work I got a text telling me that one of the higher ups was coming to check on things. He was going to stay 1 night and evaluate everything today. So everyone was in a panic trying to get everything looking perfect and sparkling clean. I was given directions on how to greet him and such... But not one mention of not telling him about the office closing at night. So, I checked him in like I would anyone else, and informed him that if he needed anything after 11 he'd need to contact the next door hotel.

It wasn't until after I closed everything down and went to turn my keys in for the night that I was informed it was supposed to stay open over night to trick him into thinking it was running 24/7 again. So, I basically spilled the beans on a few months of lies my managers have apparently been feeding corporate. They had this big show setup to impress him, and I was dumb enough to ruin it by not realizing what was up.

Jeez, I feel so stupid. I barely slept at all because I was worried about what he'd say to them. I texted and apologized this morning. Got a couple texts back saying it's no big deal, but it certainly feels like it is. I gotta head in soon anyway, guess I'll find out for sure then.

That's on them, how do they expect you to work an overnight shift if they don't tell you they need you overnight that 1 night?

They never informed you about what was supposed to happen. That's on them. You were doing your job and that is all that matters. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. Afterall firing you for not knowing about a ruse they were playing on the higher ups wouldn't look good on them.

You can't be blamed for something you were never told, you should keep some evidence of this incase they try to blame you for it.

They had someone else lined up to work it. It just wasn't on the schedule. The schedule was the same as it had been, showing no workers overnight. The only difference is that my manager is going to be there this morning when normally she's off. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together and figure out it was a show...

They're ok. Just in this case, I think I should've been told. All I had to do was not mention the hotel. Instead, I accidentally exposed things as lies. Ugh.

Well, I'm not really expecting to be fired. Just with all the blunders I've caused since coming back, especially this one, I may be more trouble than I'm worth.

Anyway, I gotta go there now. Wish me luck.

How could you know to not divulge information when you were never told? That's management's fault.

Just got done talking with my main supervisor. She said it was ok. Said that the corporate people already knew, but that they just didn't fully realize what it meant. So now they do actually have to fully open this one back up. So, yeah, I think it did have a major affect on things now.

Also, my other coworker did the same thing this morning. He caught her in a lie about something else and she threw the management under the bus. lol
Jeez, this is a real mess, but at least I'm not entirely at fault.

Then I was told that after he leaves, instead of my regular short shift I have to cover another shift next door and I'll be running both again. Oh joy...

The hints we're definitely there. If things hadn't been so hectic about him arriving, and I had a moment to stop and think, I would've realized what was going on.

Oh for crying out loud... Things just keep getting better. I had to give my co-worker a ride home last night. No biggie, she just lives like 10 minutes away from me. Well, she's the one who called out sick today because apparently both her and her husband have been having Covid symptoms. Today it hit her hard and he's feeling worse too. They got tested today.

So, hurray for possible exposure to that too.

How exactly is that your fault? If they've been lying to upper management, they need to let their subordinates in on the ruse to carry it out.

Which, again, is on them. If there was a ruse, you'd need to be in on it to lie if it comes up.

You are crazy if you don't think this is their problem. Even asking you to lie to people above you so they can keep scamming the head office is a huge problem but they didn't ask you.

Sucks about the possible covid exposure. I hope you end up clean.
