It's no different than struggling to put a nail or drill a screw in a wall (my dad literally calls people to do minor stuff cause he won't even try to; struggles at basic shit)

When I moved out of my parents house I didn't know how to cook anything at all, and looking back I realize what a huge game-changer it would have been for me. I cook all the time now, and I'm teaching my son so he is able to take care of himself when the time comes.

Basic cooking is so easy and I enjoy chopping things up. Except for my pee pee of course.

I imagine most people who claim they can't cook have never even attempted to do it. They just use it as an excuse to keep being lazy and eating fast-food.

My favorite not being able to cook anecdote: My at the time 28 year old co-worker wanted to surprise his gf who does all the housework with a dinner. He decided to make spaghetti. He put everything on the stove and went to play some game. Suddenly he smelled a horrible burning smell. This genius had put a pot on the stove, tossed in the uncooked pasta and didn't even think to add water.

The other day, our vet recommended trying to feed our cats some sweet potato because they were being picky. So I bought some and told my husband I was going to roast and pure them. He in all seriousness asked me why I couldnt just chop them up and feed it to them raw. I had to explain to him that raw potatoes are disgusting. He didnt believe me and actually googled it lmao.

He basically only knows how to cook eggs and steak. And thought he could argue with me about the best way to prepare sweet potato

PS my cats hated it

Sweet potato is an acquired taste which I don't like either. You should tell him to try eating a potato raw lmao.

Preach to the choir. My roomate thinks frying random shit in a pan and serving it over rice it "cooking".

I on the other hand make Chili, Spaghetti, Fried Chicken, Burgers, Stir Fry, Mac'n'Cheese, Tacos/Burritos, etc.

wait, he know how to make (a very overly complicated) salad.

I admit I'm lazy which is why I don't cook as nearly as much I should..

However cooking is so easy if you just follow a basic recipe. There's no reason to fuck up a meal unless you're just plain incompetent.

This absolutely was true for me, but when you're completely clueless it can be a little intimidating if you have no guidance at all. If I'd just had somebody show me how to cook pasta or rice or eggs or some other basic thing when I was a kid, then i think it would have raised my comfort level enough to actually try cooking other stuff as I got older. I didn't have that foundation, so fucking around with the oven or grill was out of the question

Most recipes are very easy. And considering there's so many seasonings and spices available now it makes anything taste good.

Cooking is a good time for listening to podcast. It's when I catch the weekly Bad Friends podcast.

my issue with cooking is that it's messy

like, how do you guys deal with your skin and clothes getting oily/greasy (even if only faintly)

I usually listen to music when on here. When I cook, I can focus better on a podcast

I've never been messy when cooking. I'm pretty organized and generally I'm not splashing things into a pot or cooking on high so oil is everywhere.

I remember my ex was so afraid of cooking that she simply never learned how to do anything at all in the kitchen.

We moved into a new house and she came through all sad because we didn't have a kettle yet and she couldn't make tea. I walked into the kitchen, filled a pot with water and boiled the water on the stove. She was genuinely perplexed by this.

This woman had a science degree.

Once you get to be a pretty good homecook and you have a stocked up pantry of spices and stuff, you realise you can make a lot of your own ingredients and condiments on the fly.

Like if you've planned to make hotdogs and you realise you don't have mustard, but you do have mustard seeds, and vinegar, and salt...

Stove top fan helps. I'd highly recommend one or open windows.

With recipes I find if you make the same meal often you don't even need the recipe anymore.

I don't use recipes for my stirfry anymore.

I got a recipe for a really nice chicken sweet corn soup and after like 3 or 4 times you don't need the recipe.

Couple of things:

  • use appropriate pans for the task at hand. A big dutch oven pot for heavy searing will solve most of your grease spit problems over a small frying pan
  • Use a splatter guard if you're doing something that is going to be violently spitty
  • use an extractor fan, if you can
  • Cleaning as you go. You have 3-4 minutes of downtime as something simmers away, you can wipe down some things

my parents hardly taught me anything, so I feel for people who don't even know where you start with cooking/home repair/building things

One day I just bought a bunch of eggs and chicken and rice and made a mess and burned the shit out of it watching youtube tutorials. There is an initial hump. "Turn on the burner" -- the hell is a burner? To what, 10? How do I know it's on? "Boil water and add some salt" -- how bubbly is boiling? A cup of salt? a few grains? What is some? "Brown the outside of a tortilla" -- corn, flour or wheat tortilla? How many kinds of tortilla are there? How brown? The whole thing?

I remember it being a pretty hard process tbh

I used to work for a Japanese restaurant as a prep cook

I rarely cook for myself though because it rarely feels worth the effort

Putting nails in the wall is an art form though, guarantee I'd hit a nail or a pipe on my first blind attempt
