The same people now pretending to care about the Oscars would tell you that there is statistically too much diversity on film given the demographics of America.

After reading through this topic I have realized that this was actually kind of a brilliant move on "the academy's" part. They have manged to put a bandaid on a problem that was actually fixing itself to deflect from the real problem that exists.

People laughed when they said there would be quotas

I remember saying that the Oscars should just rotate the winners every year, so you could guarantee there would be representation across the board. Maybe they could do it like the NBA lottery, so an unrepresented group like Vietnamese actors could win the Oscar this year and next year it would be Mongolians or Nigerians. If you dont do it this way, some groups will never win.

How do people sleep at night knowing that the only reason they got their job is because they're black/gay/deaf/whatever, rather than through their own merits? I'd hate having to show up at work every day just to meet a quota.
Id imagine similarly to how people who only got a job due to nepotism or having a connection do. Those people seem to sleep just fine.

Having read through the full list of standards now, this is basically a non-issue. If the productions themselves are more diverse, its likely well see the representation of the few minorities we DO see on screen improve for the better.

My main concern was that wed just end up with more tone deaf message movies from people that dont actually understand the nuisances of the topics theyre covering.

Not really the same thing, at all. Not even the slightest bit.

A buddy of mine or a family member getting me a job is a lot better and in no way the same thing as me getting a job because Im some person that they only need to save their ass. A family member or friend getting me a job will help me move up and will care about me being there, someone hiring me to check off a box isnt going to give one damn about me and is probably doing whatever they can to make me leave.

So again, not even the slightest bit of the same thing.

Greenbook

When I think of what's wrong with modern woke whites that is exactly the movie I am thinking of. Greenbook is a movie about a white man for white people to experience what it was like to be a black person at a given time period. It's a white savior film. Dances with Wolves was an earlier example of this (also a Best Picture winner). And I am not saying those are bad films, they're great films (Dances with Wolves especially). But they are a false diversity. They are diversity through the lens of a white person for the sake of other white people. That's the kind of stuff that wins because the Academy is largely white people and it's easy for them to self-insert into something like Greenbook. They already view themselves as white saviors, so naturally a film like that appeals to them.

Look, I'm all about more diversity in movies, I just want it to happen on my own personal timetable, and not be enforced in any way I personally deem to be arbitrary or unnecessary. If underrepresented groups in the industry can't just keep waiting patiently for the privileged to naturally share a slice of said privilege, then that's really no one's problem but their own. Trust me, these underrepresented groups will be much happier with no representation than they would be with representation they didn't earn.

I really, truly despise having to add /s to posts like this nowadays.

There are ways to tackle this issue without incentivizing tokenism. This whole thing is more of a "look how virtuous and not racist we are" moment seeing as it would be pretty hard to fail the given qualifications, but forced representation solves no underlying issues as to why they are underrepresented in the first place.

It's truly astounding how many people ITT are literally incapable of fathoming a world where diversity exists and just immediately jump to believing that any diversity in media is forced diversity. Just says so much about their worldview when their immediate response is to get aggressive and refuse to believe that movies will be good if a few black people or gay people are in them.

Regardless, in both cases a major factor in you getting the job is only because of something that you are mostly not in control of. And Id argue that someone getting favoritism for a job particularly because they are black/woman/lgbt or whatever is probably more qualified for it in general then the dude they gets the job because he is the owners son. Unless you think companies routinely filter resumes based on minority criteria (some of which are impossible to know beforehand), how would said person even get to the table in the first place?

If someone wants to hire me cause Im black, good for them. Ilol sleep at night just fine because I know my skills, I know my worth, I know my work ethic and have been outperforming my counterparts (regardless or race) since I was a child. If being black outs the cherry on top, Ill be smiling in my sleep.
