I never really played the original, but he does come off a bit edgy in the remake.

but more in the socially awkward way, where it seems he can't really relate/open up to others way, so it's not so bad, IMO.

Closer to the original than whatever they tried to make him post Advent Children, if that's what you mean.

For what its worth, in the originals he tries to be all distant and disinterested/stoic in the beginning, but for plot-related details he starts to let himself act like himself, which is a more casual, laid back guy with a good head on his shoulders

havent played the Remake but since it covers the beginning only itd make sense for him to act all tryhard badass

To be fair the remake is only the Midgar portion of the game. He became more charismatic after Midgar.

Which is exactly Cloud's character in Midgar. FF7R wasn't a perfect game but the characterization was fucking awesome for everyone. The only person who was kind of weird was Sephiroth. But he's barely in the game so it's kind of hard to get a true gauge of him.

Are you implying the original version of him wasn't as edgy? I feel like people build a fantasy around the original depiction of the characters and then roll with that instead of the reality. But with no facial expressions or visual movements, I can see why that would be the case here. You gotta leave room for them to not build from what was going on in your head. He was always edgy. Zidane was the ps1 protagonist that ditched the edge. If they made Zidane edgy, I'd understand the blowback

He's way closer to his original characterization than the stuff that came later. He's the guy who's more trying to be cool and badass than actually being cool and badass because in actuality he's a fucking dork.

Cloud tried to put on the persona of an edgy person but failed at times. He opens up with his true personality later in the game. Since the remake only goes up to the end of Midgar I'd say they captured him perfectly. Maybe even better because of the inclusion of voice acting. You can see the cracks in his tough guy act quite a bit.

Sometimes I feel like there's a war going on to get rid of characters with depth.

People are always like "why is he badass in this aspect but he's all sensitive here" "Why does ge contradict himself later on in this part". Cause it's called depth and character growth motha fucka.

That ain't so much what's going on here, but it's been building up from watching sone commentary videos and reading sone posts.

Cloud was edgy in the PS1 but it wasnt all there was to the character. The expanded universe stuff turned him into a parody. >_>

But judging by the responses to this topic it seems hes ok now, so thats good. <_<

Remakes and continuations are a mistake. Authors shouldn't get a second chance to revise their own work with the benefit of decades of hindsight.

"I didn't mean to have turn-based combat."
"I didn't mean for Cloud to be a hero. I wanted him to be a member of My Chemical Romance."
"I didn't mean for Tifa to be known for her figure. I meant for Aerith -- yes, Aerith -- to be the woman everyone talked about."

Like people said, this game only covers the section before all his growth happens. Im just waiting to see where they go with that universe shit. I don't have any expectations. But I wasn't huge on all the added filler to the Remake and the original material being the only good stuff doesn't give me high hopes.

Im honestly more surprised that people care more about other characters than they do about Tifa being made into a weebs fantasy. She the character they changed the most and for the worse. Maybe Im falling into the thing I mentioned earlier about putting your own spin on the polygons and lack of technology. But holy shit was her character uninterested and cringy. She was literally one upped by a side character, that was given more personality. It was almost like she was a poor man's Jessie in that game. If you had nothing else to go off of. She was like if they half assed a version of Jessie. Maybe it's cause I had less expectations for Jessie and more for Tifa. Im just waiting for the rest to really judge. Remake as it stands now is like a 7-8/10

Played FF7 Remake. I'd say....yes and no?

He seems edgy (and it's likely a front), but he's also really socially awkward and the other characters waste no time picking on him for it.

The full on dance number that occurs in I think Sector 6 was one of my favorite moments of the game because it shows that Cloud, weirdly enough, is a good dancer and seemed to be into it a little too much.

Which is the best part. Im not big on when people in games have obvious personality quirks and no one ever reacts to them. There's no depth there. Fuckin acknowledge the characters for who they are and not just as if they were a blank slate you have no prior relationship with. People who know each other for awhile comment on each others character traits. Even better if your writing is so good they change up how they address each other to work off specific personalities.

Agreed.

I REALLY loved the dynamic between Aerith and Cloud in particular from Remake, because Aerith was the main one poking holes in Cloud's tough guy persona, but she's so adorable that Cloud sorta just dealt with it.

Cloud is fine in the remake. Like others said, he tries to act cool but he comes off as a dork which the other characters play off of. I love the character interactions in the remake honestly. Can't wait to see what the devs do with the other characters when they are introduced. Yuffie used to talk about messing with Red XIII a lot but we never really saw that in the original game. Remake is the perfect opportunity to build better relationships between these characters.

I'll give the writers this. They really nailed the characters in FF7 Remake so far.

I need to play it again at some point. Part of me feels like my mind might of just not been there. Like it could of been any game and I just wasn't in a mood to care about what was happening. I been running into this a lot. However, Yakuza 6 has recently proved I can still get super involved in a good story.
