4th grade. Didn't hear about it in school at all. Don't remember if any kids left school early (we were a little under two hours away from NYC).

When my next door neighbor and I got off the bus at the end of the day my mom got us as she often did, and my dad was already home from work. Went in and he was watching TV in the sun room, I immediately recognized NYC with just smoke everywhere, I said to my dad "oh was there a fire in NY city?" and he just said "oh it was more than just a fire." Shrugged my shoulders and went downstairs with my neighbor (occasionally came over after school) to watch Spongebob I'm pretty sure. Then my parents called me back upstairs and asked me if I knew the Twin Towers in NYC (yes) and then said they weren't there anymore because someone flew planes into them.

I was just kinda like "oh that sucks" but I didn't really get the impact of the moment at that age.

I was asleep in my dorm. My buddy came pounding on my door yelling about us going to war. Got up and watched the news. Tried to call my pops after cause I couldn't remember where his brother worked, but I thought it was either in or close to the Trade Center.

I was sleeping when the 1st plane struck here in California. Then woke up for school(senior) and was watching live when the second plane hit the tower. At 1st I thought it was a replay of what happened but quickly noticed both towers were now on fire. I remember seeing people jumping off the tower...Will never forget

i was in elementary school. teacher brought all of us into a room to talk about it, and she showed a picture of the twin towers. none of us heard of the towers until after they were struck. we were sent home early and my family and i watched the news all night. i got sent to my room for making a joke about it lol, cuz i was young and didnt understand the importance of what just happened.

Only guy I recognize out of there was CyricZ, the rest I don't remember or never met.

Look at how many people are trying to get away with trolling 9/11 the moment it happened. Like that guy saying "i might be a heartless bastard, but you don't have to mod me", I bet his account is no longer active.

Very awesome piece of history you saved there.

Also, I was in school. Teachers heard about it in the break room, came back to the classrooms and stopped teaching. Everyone just turned on the tv and time basically stopped for about 3 days.

I was on my way home from school, 6th grade. Got home and just stood in the living room staring at the TV, confused.

I'm excessively elderly so was out of high school--going to start college in a couple weeks, didn't have anything to do all day until work at 4:30pm, so I was sleeping when the first hit. My dad worked third shift at the time and woke me up before he went to bed to tell me a plane hit the WTC. And my first thought (like a lot of people) was "well okay, that sucks but its probably just a tiny prop plane and isn't going to cause much damage" and I was annoyed me woke me up for that, lol.

I got up and was watching the coverage, and there was discussion back and forth over the next 20 minutes or so about the type of plane... people calling in from the street and some saying it looked like a tiny plane and others saying it looked like a big passenger plane--and there was discussion about if it was just a weird fluke accident, a suicidal pilot in a tiny plane, etc. And then the second plane hit. I think a terror attack had been mentioned before that but mostly in passing and they were going over a lot of possibilities, until then when it became clear.

Then came all the mis-information! A plane down here, a missile there, a helicopter over there, the capital building on fire, etc. Pretty hectic and confusing and crazy.

I watched the coverage on Fox News at the time (lol) but a few years back I watched the recording of live CNN coverage over those couple hours, and I'm overly amused by one dude they had on (I think it was a NY affiliate, not CNN proper that they were running the feed from for a while) who even after the second plane kept asking everyone they had on if it could just be some major radar malfunction sending planes to the WTC, and a pilot dude they had on was like, "uh... no. That's not how that works." but he kept going on about it. >_>

High school AP US History class

When I woke up for High school, the first building had already got hit. When I went to first period Electronics, we watched the second plane hit the other tower live. It was so surreal, but I felt a lot of patriotism which is something I had never felt before that moment.

I was a baby, like a handful of days away from being 6 months old.

My parents were home with me, and it was crazier for them since we live in Jersey and it was relatively close. Like looking back at it now, I don't think it'd have been too far fetched to think that Philly could have been targeted as well.

I grew up in a suburb of New York so that day is still kind of strange. Its definitely caused trauma, in the first world type trauma sense. I can't really watch clips of the towers coming down or the planes or the people without an emotional response. It was a commuter town so everyone knew people that worked in the buildings or was a responder or that died that day.

Every year about this time I will listen to Howard Stern's 9/11/01 show (you can find it on youtube usually -- I also DL it in case it gets removed). Say what you want about Stern but that show is such a great piece of history. It captures that day perfectly. It starts with him joking about Pam Anderson and talking about random B.S., then when the first plane hits the mood changes to curiosity and there are still some jokes until they see a clip of what happened. Then the second plane hits and the mood turns to anger when it becomes clear its an attack. Then when the first building goes down it become more disbelief. Then the second one goes down and its a mix of fear, anger, and sadness. You really can feel the confusion and shock from that day.

I was late for school and caught the second plane hitting on the news. Didn't know it was real at the time, I remember thinking it was a trailer for a movie.

Wasn't until an hour or so after I got to school that everything shut down.

I live very close to Three Mile Island and I remember everyone freaking out that it might be a target.
