Social media has just made it apply to normal people instead of celebs and now it is much harder to shake. it has also just gotten worse and become a pass time.

Another thing is it comes from young people opposed to older people like it used to.

Social ostracizing always been a thing. Its just easier and more severe since social media became a thing.

Also, the anonymity of the Internet means you dont need to take any kind of personal responsibility for ruining peoples lives, so theres added incentive.

Now that I think about it, it really is a Grand Ole Projection thing. You can't even really "both sides" it because the reasons behind each side's cancelings usually differ; the right being from a place of malice or dramatic metathesiophobia while the left usually wants someone to pay for an injustice or for saying something that people shouldn't really be saying.

You might want to try more of that thinking part, maybe dwell on it for a couple of decades.
