The one where we find out Skinner is Hank Tazaria or something. It's really funny though and had a lot of good jokes.

the implications are stupid (silly), but the episode itself is pretty funny. the truly dark years are still a little further down the line.

Literally, the whole point of the episode is that it's not canon. It's a spoof of game-changing episodes which have no actual bearing on a show moving forward.

Also, Snowball 2 is really Snowball 3. Lisa just found it easier to cope with the death of her second cat by naming the third cat after the second one including numerical title.

Its not a bad episode by any means, just an average one. I liked the part were Agnes feels bad for never telling her fake son how she was proud of him. You also learn a bit more about her and what kind of terrible games they play together. Season 9 is definitely where quality starts to dip but it still has plenty of good episodes.

yeah, I'm willing to cut the episode some slack since it goes out of its way to note just how dumb it is, especially at the end where Judge Snyder makes "Armin" the real Skinner and issues a dire warning to those who mention it again

It was the beginning of the end.
it really wasn't though. The show was still good for a few more seasons after that.

I really do think that the lines we draw for the quality of the Simpsons varies depending on when we were born. People who grew up in Simpsonmania regard season 5 as the beginning of the end. The wider millenial consensus is that season 9 is the beginning of the end. Personally, I think the show was hitting the bottom of the barrel around season 15 with that episode where Springfield bullies Bart into attempting suicide for dropping a championship-winning catch for his little league team.

The Simpsons was entertaining for years after season 9. One of my favorite Treehouse of Horror episodes was the one where Homer clones himself with a magic hammock, and that was in season 14. I think it depends on when you start watching the show, and the show only got properly bad years after all the diehard fans keep insisting the show died.

"The Boys of Bummer", that was a pretty disgusting episode

It's not a good episode by any means, but Homer's whole "let's never mention this again" speech at the end should make it clear the writers were just trolling the audience. Instead, fans are mad that Skinner is no longer the real Seymour Skinner. You'd think Star Wars had just outed Darth Vader as being Luke's uncle and not his father.
