He's talking about the character "Sister Krone" which yeah her character design is a bit on the level of mammy trope. But at least the series does have some other pretty cool characters of color that make up for Krone and Sister Krone does play a very important part in helping the orphans before her death.

The Promised Neverland is pretty good.

It doesnt hold back its punches too much when dealing with children trying to survive a nightmare scenario. My criticism is that it still features that cliche of (several) super-intelligent children, but its presented a little better than most other anime, at least.

Its still cliche shonen lol you can coat it in shiny paint this still hits all the tropes and Im getting bored

That series gets so bad after the first arc. I really had to force myself to keep reading. Just watch the first season and drop it.

It's extremely unfortunate. I wish more anime/manga fans would be open to discussing it (and the generally... poor depictions of any non-white foreigner in the mediums) instead of just sweeping it under the rug.

Man I wonder if I should mention the Tom Sawyer RPG for the Famicom. I was looking at lists of recommended RPGs for Famicom and putting an order together to catch up on ones I never played. One of them I kept seeing was Tom Sawyer by Square. I literally am not sure I could post a screenshot without being moderated. It's unreal. You can't even find a depiction like that outside the game. Like they had a Ton Sawyer anime in the 70s and Jim looks completely normal. That game though. Man it was so bad it was hard to even play it. It makes Mr. Popo look like a human.

It's not true. Most Japanese media doesn't feature stereotyped depictions of black people. Every TV station in Japan has black celebrities on. There are famous black people in Japan. Media from overseas with black people is very popular. If someone is depicting black people that way, it's intentional. It likely isn't intended to be offensive, but it absolutely is intentional and not some case of I don't know what a black person looks like.

I live in the middle of nowhere and there are at least two black people here.

Oh boy. I googled this and saw the box art first. Assumed the tan fellow at the top left was Jim and thought, "Well, it's a bit stereotypical, but not-" and then I saw the bottom right. That's not even subtle.

There's a really uncomfortable segment of the fandom that thinks that Japanese works have no political themes and that they have no concept of racism/sexism/etc.

oh I did stop watching it, stop rephrasing what i'm trying to say, I was using davido-kun as an example for the majority of anime fans who are inherently prejudice and don't see a problem with that sort of character archtype

There actually is this guy here called Debito Arudou (David Aldwinckle) who is a "Gaijin rights activist". He is awful and makes things worse for Gaijin just by existing.

I mean if anything the cliche shonen really hits when it turns into just another battle manga with OP characters. So I give the start, what is the first season of the anime, props, but man is it just painfully generic in the end.

Yep, they just do everything. The manga doesn't really have anything interesting past that anyway. It's just them wrecking everything and then you think it's over but they need to go wreck more stuff and then it ends for real.

The point is any of the mind games or thinking aspects evaporated very quickly. It's all about guys fighting guys.

That's a shame. I just got to the part where Emma and the rest reunite with Norman, and have a disagreement about how to handle the demons.

I was hoping the mystery and horror would continue, but I still intend to finish it and reach my own conclusions

From what Ive seen, its still better than the US.

Every interview with Americans on the Black Experience in Japan YouTube channel says the same thing. Japan is a better place to live than America for black people according to them. It's just a selection of people on YouTube, but I haven't seen people saying the opposite, and since you don't get killed for being black here that seems like a pretty low bar to climb over.
