Every interview with Americans on the Black Experience in Japan YouTube channel says the same thing. Japan is a better place to live than America for black people according to them. It's just a selection of people on YouTube, but I haven't seen people saying the opposite, and since you don't get killed for being black here that seems like a pretty low bar to climb over.

Yeah this is what I've seen as well. Also seems to be mostly urban places like Tokyo. I've seen videos with white people who speak fluent japanese experiencing racism in rural areas but even that was tame compared to the kinds of racism you'll find in America.

This is just anime.

Also yeah, the series gets both shonen-y and slightly edgy after first season.

I just also want to point out that even when they are tropy stereotypes, they are often still given better characterization than the tokens get in American medium.

Good point.

Also relevant to the topic. I've also just learned about this manga called "Knuckle" from Boxington.

it's a revenge tale that takes place in the 1800s, where a black man hunts down KKK members, who are actually demons who use racism to eat black people

it was created by a school friend of Miura, the creator of the Berserk series, and you can see a lot of similarities in their art styles (at least, early on)

I find this to be a very interesting premise.
