They explain that in 2, I thought? She has a device on her belt that does it, I think they never told her so she thought she was special

Hmm.. I remember that bit.. but for some reason it coming back at the end even when the device was turned off

Oh damn, you're totally right.

Been so long since I played, I forgot she was even there. Just watched it, she deflects a ton of RAY missiles and all sorts. Not sure that ever got explained.

No worries - I got the sense they put that in for a "AHA! you thought it was gone but not really" moment

I dont get what's so hard to understand about MGS's plot. Every game has a theme that it revolves around, and if you pay attention during the cutscenes it's not hard to put it all together

Is it really that easy to convert enemy soldiers to join you?

I mean, I guess being persuaded to join Big Bosses' army wouldn't be too hard since apparently BB is a legend and people idolize the fuck out of him?
The implication is Ocelot drugs and tortures the fuck out of them

Also they recruit children

Metal Gear is an Enigma. Its a story driven game that you dont play for the story.

It's not really the plot from each game that's difficult to understand, it's everything that's not explicitly in cutscenes or required codec convos. There's tons of behind-the-scenes stuff going on that you have to go out of your way to read or listen to discover about the story that plenty of gamers just aren't going to see that ends up being important in other games. Didn't 2 have an entire book in it written by Natasha that you have to read to get the entire story? Most gamers aren't going to read that, they're just going to play the game.

the whole plot? no, since i haven't played the games myself
i understand the gist the first two games

when people try to point out how convoluted it is, they word things horribly with loads of extraneous detail, which is what makes things actually confusing

The story was great until the 4th part. It's a shame that was an entry to wrap up the saga, I couldn't get into it and the subsequent games and spin offs just didn't click anymore. The first three MGS games were masterpieces though.

Which game did you play and what did you not understand

MGS 1,2-3 and Snake Eater.I didnt understand any of the rivalries of the "boss's".I understood the objectives but not why I was doing most of it.Maybe I read too much into the cutscenes thinking there was more than just "the bad guys".

I played MGS 1, 2, 3, and pinch of Peace Walker. they're not "hard" to follow, but it seems like they have unnecessary twists. every 10 minutes the whole game has to get turned on its head.

and for all the talk about the various metal gear varieties being dangerous mobile ICBM launchers that threaten the world, the only thing they ever seem to do is chase after the player...

Yes, I can sum it up really quickly.

A decades long struggle between control and freedom personified by Zero (control) and Big Boss (freedom), both of whom become misguided in their attempts. Big Bosss clone Solid Snake becomes the hero who ultimately destroys both visions and end their ideological war.

Um didn't Big Boss eventually gave up on his ideals by via death but then his remnants Ocelot, EVA and Liquid also wanted to destroy Zero's ideal as well?

Solid Snake used to be in FOXHOUND, but he retired, and the only other members he has a direct connection to are Gray Fox and Big Boss. But all this happens in the 8Bit MSX games. (Which you can play on the Sustenance version of MGS3). I think MGS has a summary of them somewhere in the options menu. Liquid acts like he and Solid Snake know each other because he has plot-related reasons for hating him, and knows lore that Snake isn't privy to. (Les Enfants Terible)

I don't recall him being personally connected to anyone in Dead Cell, but by that point he had been working independently off screen with Otakon for several years between MGS and MGS2, so I don't think there's a reason to look deeply into it.

The Cobra Unit was The Boss's unit in World War 2, and are working for/with her during her mission with Volgin.

They're not nearly as hard to get as some people think. The games spoonfeed you the entire message and the important plot points between games. It's just that the games are dense, and when there's huge gaps of time between playing the games, the plot threads throughout get fuzzy.

I played them on the collection, one after the other so that helped.
