Wasn't that a meta joke in the movie or am I thinking of something else?

Yes AND the lead female sacrificed herself in an incredibly anticlimactic way to save them. Don't think I've ever seen that in a film before. I was always pleasantly surprised by that ending.

As a kid when I first saw it I felt the same tbh.

See post # 13 for the answer.

Also according to TV Tropes, the ending we got wasn't the original O_O. It's less impressive knowing they only changed it because test audiences didn't like it, and not due to some massive creative cojones.

  • Final Girl: Subverted, in a case of Real Life Re-Writes The Plot. Originally Susan was meant to survive and Preacher die, but because test audiences found her so annoying and Preacher so likable, the studio actually went back and re-shot the ending.

Ahh damn kinda disappointing. Seemed like itd be intentional considering the intention behind Samuel Jackson.

I mean they didn't HAVE to follow the test audiences responses. A studio, especially at that time, saying "Fuck it, let's go this route" is still somewhat impressive.

Also kudos to the test audiences.

Honestly the ending, the cast, the premise, the deaths. Deep Blue Sea really is a fantastic B-movie.
