I got a 500 mbps fiber optic package because Hawaii is far af from everywhere and I need all I can get to play games online without it going at a snail's pace. Unfortunately, the guy said he couldn't put it on the second floor and instead had to put it downstairs. That kinda sucks because I can't hook it up to my PS4. Was he just lazy or is there a legitimate reason? And if he had a reason, is it possible for an electrician to have a work around?

Fiber optic is the cable that comes into your house. You can run ethernet cable from that box to anywhere you want within your house.

What's the point of having fiber optic internet if you are going to bottleneck your speed with ethernet?

Cat5e cable supports up to 1 gbps and Cat6(current standard) supports 10 gbps. Way more than the 500 mbps coming into the house.

The problem is that it would need to go all the way up the stairs then across the hall. So it would be both unsightly and a tripping hazard :<

He could run fiber if where he needs it is >300 feet. A media converter would be needed.
Yeah but considering he had 300 ft to work with, I didn't feel the need to mention that.

Yeah :<

Although TBH even if it was my house I wouldn't really want a line taped down across the bathroom <_<

If it was your house, you'd run cable behind the drywall. Install ethernet wall ports that run down to your router.

Look into Powerline adapters. They allow data to flow through the copper wiring in the house. There can be blip issues if you're transferring from an outlet on one breaker to an outlet on another breaker but still probably better than the wifi bottleneck in the ps4.

It's not as difficult as you're imagining. You can run the wire against the wall with cable staples fairly easily.

Powerline Adapters were a large bottleneck for me. Instead I'd look at wifi-to-ethernet adapters. Install one directly above your router and connect that, via cable, to your PC/console

I bought my first home recently. So I bought gigabit Internet as my treat to go with it. But I couldnt receive 1000Mbps over WiFi, so I knew I had to get hard wired upstairs to my bedroom, which is where my PC and Xbox are. Interestingly, All of the upstairs bedrooms in the house have Ethernet jacks on the walls, but for some strange reason I couldnt figure out where is the main Ethernet jack in the home. If I connected my router to the main Ethernet jack, then all of the bedrooms upstairs have cable wired gigabit internet.

After looking in the garage, attic, living room, etc... I gave up and bought a 100ft cat7 cable off Amazon, and I ran it upstairs to my bedroom. Its a little embarrassing and I have to explain all my guests why I have a cable across my beautiful wooden floor

I promise you that you will never reach or need the bandwidth limit of ethernet in your life.

Why do we lay fibre optic cables and not Ethernet ones?

This intrigues me. So they get the wifi signal and you can plug them directly into the console? Will that get rid of most of the slowdown?

You run an ethernet cable from them into the console.

I'm not sure re ping, but in terms of speed they were faster than my powerline Adapters by miles

They said the wait time was over 2 hours <_<

Good idea. I haven't had to deal with this issue in several years so my info is probably a bit outdated. I set up wireless access points in my home which work perfect for my needs.

Quick easy to read article cause I'm too lazy to type out the reasons.

If you have a newer house, usually the Ethernet jacks will connect in a smart panel or structured wiring panel that is most often in the master bedroom closet or the laundry room.

It often looks like a white metal plate that you unscrew and inside youll find the Ethernet cables to each room.

You would have to buy an Ethernet switch (usually theres an electrical outlet in the smart panel) and then connect the Ethernet jack to your router to one port and then the Ethernet for your bedrooms on the remaining ports (often the cables are labeled in black sharpie as to what room they go to)

you're talking transmission lines right? mostly because they have a much wider bandwidth for their size. they're also functionally impossible to 'hack' because of the way they function.

I looked everywhere for this.. I became really upset because I couldnt find it. I know my home has the smart-hub-cabling because every single room has an Ethernet port. I just couldnt find that master control panel. I looked in my master bedroom closet and I looked in the garage breaker box and I looked in the laundry and attic as well.

However you pointed out that it might be closed? Its something I might have to unscrew. If thats the case then I need to take a second look. Sigh.
