A lot of people believe out of fear, how did you overcome that? The thought that this angry sky being would have your family killed in a plane crash or something if you don't pray hard enough seems kind of terrifying if that is what you were brought up thinking.

Or the Book Of Job where their God ruins a good man's life just to prove a point to Satan...from the perspective of somebody who has been indoctrinated and truly believes the books how is that not going to screw you up mentally?

I never really considered any of it real or possible. I just couldn't be convinced I guess

My mom did try to shove church down my throat and did send me to Catholic school from pre-k to 12th grade, but nah

For me it was kind of like flipping a light switch. I went from half-assed belief straight to non-belief. And of course once you realize that God doesn't exist, there's no reason to feel scared or any other emotion toward him.

If your belief is in an "angry sky being" your belief is not that serious and/or highly uninformed, and I would imagine dropping it wouldn't be that hard, especially out of rebellion.

My own original belief was not that serious or really built on anything and I did become an atheist largely out of feelings of rebellion. The toughest thing about this IMO would be other people who are vindictive about you leaving the religion, which I didn't really have to deal with thankfully.

I am no longer an atheist for reference.

I didn't. Or rather, I recognized that regardless of how I feel, it just doesn't make sense to be in denial about what makes sense. My feelings don't matter.

Yknow, Ive always found it so crazy that a lot of militant (if you will) atheists choose to associate with a group whose stances are founded in religious bullshit.
I think, it's partly pushback from groups like "Atheism+" which was seen as attempts by political movements to co-opt the atheism community

But the skeptics also became like fierce believers that the world was an equal egalitarian place and for some reason they couldn't accept the concept of privilege or systemic racism. Don't have an explosion for that one
