I was looking into picking up Mania because its one of my favorite games casually and doesnt require any weird hardware or anything but it looks like its actually kinda a boring run :(

Maybe focus on 3d games with minimal skillroof. That way you can likely avoid a lot of single-frame shenanigans.

Its one of those things where its part of what interests me but also the main thing that intimidates me, beyond just the scale of routes you need to memorize

but yeah I wanna find a game thats both interesting to me and something I could potentially grind out competitive times in eventually. RAC and Jak games are some of my favorite runs to watch but are also stupidly optimized, for example, so I dont care to try picking those up.

You need to beat the game normally dozens of times and master the fundimentals before you even start memorizing the speed run routes. Its a huge time sink

Plus it really sucks if you fuck up near the end. I've seen rage vids on that.

Damn Ray is really just completely fuckin busted lol. Hes basically level background appreciation mode, spends so much time in the air you barely see the stage, and just straight up flies over/under a bunch of bosses and entire stages. Nuts.

Also the toughest part in the WR route looks like the actual bonus stage exploit to get the emeralds fast. I might be able to learn this.

Pokemon games aren't too hard to speed run, and I find them kinda fun to do. I'm not a speed runner at all but I enjoyed doing a few of those and I was surprised I was able to keep up at a decent pace.

I feel like actually getting good at speed running would take the fun out playing your favorite games.

Try the anti speed run, see how long you can steam yourself playing the same game without beating it.

A friend of mine started out by playing Mega Man 9 and that seemed like a pretty good start considering you can easily practice just one stage at a time.

Just go into it with the mindset that you're never going to set any WRs, and just enjoy speedrunning itself.

Problem with Pokemon depending on the category is that there's a ton of RNG that no amount of planning can account for. Just watch Werster to find out.
