What have been the results of ending net neutrality over the past couple years?

I remember it being a hot topic. Then it happened. Then everyone stopped talking about it the past couple years.

Personally, I see no difference in my internet service in terms of price and service.

Montana (where I live) passed state legislation to basically keep Net Neutrality going on a state level, even though it was repealed federally.

lol they aren't going to change anything right away because then that would validate what people were saying. Give it some time before they start rolling out their new "upgrade plans"

unless I missed something it seems like people overreacted tbh

There are usually at least two ISPs in any area (unless you're in a totally rural area I guess) and if any ISP gave worse service other ISP(s) would totally use that to take customers away. You're even better off if you live in a city.

America's internet is far from the best in the world but it's still pretty good and businesses have incentive to make it better, not worse.

Even better is when some time later they flipped it around in an ad and used it as a way to promote how they support them. Showing how they're always there and care about people who serve the community. It was pretty funny, but sad. Clever way to put a 180 on the situation though.

A big reason the regulations were put in place was that Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast were caught throttling Netflix traffic until Netflix paid them to stop throttling their traffic.

https://guan.dk/assets/netflix-knowmore.png

After Netflix paid the ISPs to stop throttling their traffic, Netflix passed the cost of those payments onto their customers by increasing the cost of the subscription.

Protip: That price never came back down, so Netflix customers are still paying for that in 2020.

We're essentially just trusting that ISPs won't do that kind of thing again without the regulations being in place.

There were other net neturality related problems in the ~10 years prior to that, but that one was the most noticeable and the most widespread.

To be fair, net neutrality rules in the US don't apply to cellular service. Cellular companies have to prioritize voice over data in all cases so that too much data usage doesn't kill the ability to make phone calls.

They wouldn't want it repealed if they didn't intend to eventually do what it was put in place to stop. They are just biding their time now.

They didn't do anything yet, which is good, but it's the fact that they are allowed now that people should be worried about.

If they were going to do anything they probably should have done it after 2018 and before 2021 when a Democratic Cabinet would reinstate Net Neutrality and a Democratic Congress could make it a full law

A big reason the regulations were put in place was that Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast were caught throttling Netflix traffic until Netflix paid them to stop throttling their traffic.

Netflix actually maintains its own speed test site specifically because if ISPs try to detect it and "throttle up" the speeds to make you think your internet is faster than it is, it'll also throttle up Netflix traffic in general.

https://qz.com/688033/netflix-launched-this-handy-speed-test-so-you-can-go-shame-your-internet-provider/
And if your Fast.com results are significantly lowerthan the SpeedTest results, then that should give you pause as well. The Fast.com test checks your download speeds from Netflixs servers, while SpeedTest just connects you to random servers that are nearby, so a disparity shows that your ISP may be throttling your connection to Netflix.

Assuming they would actually even do that, it would probably take a while.

Some Democrats might like money too.

pretty much this. free market is horse shit when there's no regulation, they just all agree to not undercut each other.

areas where there is only one major ISP? or better yet where there is only one good ISP choice (not necessarily two large companies that are ISPs)

Usually non-rural areas have two major ISPs (Comcast, ATT, Verizon, Spectrum, etc) plus a bunch of smaller ones

Apparently my ISP is throttling Netflix., Fast.com gave me a speed of 190 Mbps whereas Speedtest gave me 424 Mbps.

My apartment is in an area where there is only 1 good ISP choice.

My choices are:

Spectrum (These choices are fine)
  • 100/5
  • 200/10
  • 300/20
  • 940/35

AT&T (This is not acceptable for what I need at all)
  • 20/2 at best
