Board 8 > Is it annoying day 1: When the Grocery Store pushes you into a different line

Welcome to day 1 of board 8's hot new series! The purpose of these topics is to see if everyone feels this way I do about certain things that bug me, or if I am just insane.

Day one:

When you're in line at the grocery store, and there's someone there to push you into a more empty line. Get the heck away from me lady, I'm not in a hurry. If I wanted that line, I would walk into it myself, I am a grown man. The worst is when they rush me into the express lane when I have a bunch of groceries, that lane should be empty for people who aren't buying that much! Thats why it's there!

Feel free to nominate your own grievances for future days (though I may not run them unless I also am annoyed by those things)

Can Day 2 be how annoying is it when you're waiting in line forever without any new cashiers opening up their lanes?

It's worse when a new line opens up and all of the people behind you or people who weren't even in line yet run to that one.

I'm not bothered by this at all tbh. If there's a quicker way to get my stuff checked out and be on my way, why would that bother me?

The closest I've come to this is at a store with self-scan checkout machines, they have a staff member telling people in line whenever one opens up (in case they didn't notice). This is actually a positive good because I don't want some goofus ahead of me standing around when there's an available machine.

At first I thought this was when a new register opened, which might be a 2.

I've never had someone say to move to a shorter line where you would still have to wait. But that would be annoying, so I voted 4.

The MOST annoying is going to the self-checkout lane because you want no human contact and they still come over to ask how you are.

I've had it happen a few times but every time it's like "Yes please thanks" because nobody likes standing in line at the grocery store. Literally nobody. I won't believe anybody that says they do. Anybody that is like "No, you know what? I'd rather wait longer, thanks." isn't a real person and needs to be apprehended so we can learn their alien schemes.

I go into longer lines

1. to leave other lines open for people in a hurry
2. to creep on someone's weird shopping list
3. because the cashier is less annoying/smelly

I mean not much longer lines, but I don't mind waiting an extra two minutes for any of the above reasons.

People (who aren't disabled/pregnant/using it for some legit reason etc) getting into an elevator and going up ONE FLOOR when the stairs are clearly visible
Blinking lights in a dark room when trying to sleep

In general, yes this practice makes sense, to keep the line moving. But they still manage to annoy me by INSTANTLY and ASSERTIVELY being like "SiR! tHeRe'S a MaChInE oPeN" when roughly 0.3 seconds have passed since the last customer walked away, and there's only 1 or 2 people total standing in line, and I am clearly staring directly at the empty machine and milliseconds away from taking my first step toward it.

Honorable mention to this 10-ish year old punk who thought he was going to teach me how to use electronics not all that long ago. He was with a woman one space behind me in line. I saw an open machine and walked up to it, only to realize there was a transaction started with 1 item rung up. I looked around and didn't see anyone who was apparently using the machine. I took about 1 second to briefly consider whether I should just clear out this instance or move to a different machine. During this 1 second, my gaze happened to be directed toward the screen. This kid, assuming I was an idiot who couldn't use technology, piped up in the most condescending voice (he probably has to teach adults in his life this stuff all the time) "all you need to do is hit cancel...". He lacked the capacity to realize maybe possibly I was considering something outside the bounds of the literal screen I was looking at. I didn't say anything but man I wanted to teach that child a lesson, lol.

I've been going to the same few stores for over a decade and I definitely do not know any such thing

My mom used to hate this because she liked to put the groceries on the belt in the way she wanted them bagged together because otherwise the baggers did it all wrong (not putting cold stuff together, bread getting smushed, etc.) And I guess there wasn't enough time to do it if there was no one in front of her in line

I voted 3 cause it's annoying if your friend is the cashier and about to hook it up with a discount but you get moved to another line
