It's not a remake tho, it's a prequel to the John Carpenter movie

The biggest disappointment about that movie is them replacing the animatronics they shot with full CGI instead of just enhancing them where necessary.

This was such an absurd thing to do.

let's not jump the gun with the CGI, the story is absolutely stupid, even moreso when you're expected to believe that all happened BEFORE the original

Just finished it....

The alien bursting out of the iceblock the way it did was incredibly anticlimactic and the CGI was poor. The fact that scientists wanted to go without protective gear was also very dumb. You don't even see how most got infected. Yea bad movie, but for a $4 rental I'm not mad

i don't like how it's suddenly some intelligent spaceship type alien, as opposed to the more animalistic abomination it is in the original. going in this huge sci-fi spaceship and all that... just cheesy to me, and kind of strips away what made the original so interesting.

actually that's a good way to put it, this one went too sci-fi, and departed too much from the more "monster" kind of horror

before i forget, quick shoutout to the stuffed doll they used in the blood test scene in the original. john carpenter said the effects director's claymation wasn't convincing enough, so they used a literal fucking DOLL instead.....

Well I loaded up a Mars movie were they find bacteria that made them turn into rage zombies. It was shitty.

Lastly I watched Arrival, holy hell that sure made up the time wasted! Excellent movie!

they also made a game called The Thing, which is a sequel, i think? so the order of the series goes:

The Thing
The Thing
The Thing

They were thinking making a story about the first camp would be a good idea, and it was, but it was executed pretty poorly. The CGI being a pretty big misfire.

I appreciated all the tie ins to the 80's movie though, like how the axe got stuck in the wall, etc.

Controversial opinion alert -

Apart from the CGI, I didn't think it was that bad.

It certainly wasn't great or very good, and nothing close to the first which is one of the best films I can ever recommend, but people act like it's one of the worst films ever and it's not really.

The fact that the original, made using puppetry and animatronics, looks better and more unsettling, is definitely bad for the prequel, but it's not a bad film in and of itself.

One of the main issues for me is just how quick it is to move on and attack the humans. In the original it tries to hide and mask its presence, in the prequel it goes balls to the wall immediately.
