...

As you may or may not know, I have a beef with Wayforward games and The Mummy Demastered is pretty much the epitome of what I don't like about them.

All the graphics and sounds and music are really good and the character controls well (well, after I adjusted my gamepad's deadzone... but that's an every game thing)

BBBBUUUUUUTTTT

It has every possible game design sin known to modern games that Warforward somehow capitalizes on: Plot based backtracking, annoying enemies, bosses with too much health, annoying enemies, actual disincentives to explore in an exploration game (even worse than the Shantae games), annoying Russel Crowe plot goblin telling me how to give Axl or Zero more chips from rescued reploids...

Oh, and annoying enemies... there's this fire skull that takes like 10 ish hits to kill and when you kill it it explodes... but you can't do the platforming while they're chasing you, so what do? Just intenionally jump into them! You'll legit take less damage just killing yourself than actually fighting things.

At no point did I go "YEEEEEEAAAH!!! I'm shootin' shit!" in A GAME ABOUT SHOOTIN' SHIT!!.. .. .. .. . . well, ok, I did for a bit after getting the Flamethrower since it counters most of the most annoying enemies

You described what I don't like about Wayforward way (heh) better than I could have.
I'm not optimistic but hopefully they do better with Castlevania.

I got that wishlisted. Someday I'll get it.

Have you played Aliens Infestation? Another Metroidvania shooter from Wayforward.

No, but I checked that wiki and I love this quote

> The A.V. Club gave it a B+, saying, "It's a shame that Aliens: Infestation peters out by the end. In the push toward the conclusion, the upgraded weapons you've collected lessen the threat, and the thin plot culminates in a boring fight against a big alien queen

THAT'S EVERY WAYFORWARD GAME

My biggest problems with Aliens was the controls and that you can't just swap out party members, you only can claim new people by killing old ones.

With names like that, I'm made to think of a stupid Pokemon clone I heard about only yesterday

I liked The Mummy Demastered.
Well, it wasn't exactly the best game I've ever played but I had fun playing it.

The music is just simply amazing. One of my favourites being the boss music, and combining the amount of health the bosses have it really feels like an intense endurance round.
The scarab boss in the tower especially. It is probably my favourite boss in the game.

The final boss was kinda on the easy side though and you could quickly kill it with the Flamethrower and Plasma beam.

Could you elaborate? I completed that game, but do not really remember any irritations in the exploration aspect.

Ok, it goes like this;

You have an objective, it's marked as a waypoint. it's fair to assume there will be a boss and a new powerup.

Don't you DARE explore though! Because every single side path will require that powerup... not just the wayforward

In addition, for no reason, exploration paths near the beginning of the game can now use that power up to get Relics... Metroid also did this, but to a lesser extent - an example being that in the very first room you need either bomb jump, space jump or speed booster to get to the upper right corner, and a power bomb to open it... however, that's ALMOST EVERY ITEM in The Mummy and most of the side content in Shantae.... .... and Metroid doesn't get off the hook either, Metroid 2 Remake was also full of this crap

Ok, perfect example:

Near the end of the game, like the 2nd to last zone you get a new movement ability, in a secret area mind you, for the Phase Dash.

Guess how useful it is?

...

...

Near zero. In the WHOLE GAME it is required for only 2 walls... and both of them are in the SECOND level (or third depending on how you math it out) and almost right next to each other. It is required a third time IN THE SAME AREA not for breaking a wall, but just because it functions like a double jump.

That's an endgame item, required virtually no where, and where it IS needed... it at the beginning.
