The trailer for the Gamecube is still the most hype moment I've ever experienced in gaming:

This absolutely blew my mind as a youngster and really felt like the "future is here" type moments. The Link-Gannondorf fight, Metroid shown after a large absence in the N64 era, Luigi finally in his own game, hundreds of Pokemon rendered on screen at once and a Perfect Dark sequel. This is how you sell a console, it's a shame we don't have these kind of reveals anymore - the PS5 & Xbox X are ridiculously tame compared to this.

The real problem is something you yourself touched on:

A lot of the power the trailer had was because you were young.

As you get older and more jaded in general, almost nothing has the same impact things did when you were younger. Even if the game/movie/book is 100x better than the thing you fondly remember from your childhood, the childhood experience is always going to be more visceral and impactful.

That's partly true but I still don't think if I was a kid today I'd see the PS5 trailer and be hyped about it (oh it's got the same Spiderman game that looks identical to the PS4 game - cool).

Maybe it's the fact that new consoles don't have the massive noticeable upgrade in graphics that they use to. The last time I noticed a huge difference was the launch of the HD era

Oof, the Meowth playing a guitar really rattled an old part of my memory. I also remember how awesome this looked.

And people are still pissed about the Zelda thing
Are they? I thought everyone had moved on after they got their realistic looking Zelda in Twilight Princess, and that was 14 years ago!

In hindsight I'm disappointed it didn't turn into an actual game. Obviously it was just a tech demo to show off the power of the GameCube but that's all the Luigi's Mansion demo was supposed to be as well...

Yeah, but on the flip-side of that, -I- didn't really give a shit about the trailer you're talking about even when it was new.

YOU were watching it with the eyes of a kid. I was watching it with the eyes of a jaded college grad in his early 20s who'd already lived through multiple console generations.

If anything, the jump that really hit me was the step from the SNES to the PS1. That's honestly the last time I remember being kind of viscerally stunned by something in gaming. The FFVII intro really was shocking to someone who had mostly been playing sprite-graphic games for years.

Fair enough, each to their own I suppose
