I've known at least a couple dogs and cats who mastered the art of sort of putting their paws on their collar and just sort of pushing their head through until they could slip it off.

The downside is, I've also heard of a couple animals who've accidentally gotten their collars stuck on things and tugged until they essentially hung themselves, so that's always a potential problem.

No clue how a dog could put another dog's collar ON, though. That sounds like some next level shit. Better be careful or he might murder you in your sleep and take over the house.

They sort of do little grumble growls and take turns dramatically Godzilla biting at each others neck areas, so my thinking is that one must have been doing that and when then the blonde one went to kick him away he must have inadvertently kicked off his own collar and onto the other dog

That's why both of my cats have quick-release collars. The breakaway device is strong enough that they aren't likely to accidentally take them off, but it won't stand up to the force of actually being caught on something. It does create the risk that they'll end up losing their collars if they ever get lost, which kind of defeats the purpose of the collars, but that's better than being strangled.
