...--a direct sequel, not a spiritual sequel--with better story but weaker game-play than the previous game.
.

[ I've finished several game sequels, lately, where the opposite: weak story with better game-play, has been true. ]

RDR2 fits the bill... unless you think of it as a prequel.

I haven't played the Redemption games, yet (still in my backlog...), so IDK.

Lol the fuck? Gameplay was far superior in RDR2 than RDR1.

Metal Gear Solid 3, IMO.

it's a great game, but constantly having to pause for camo and food really breaks up the flow of gameplay.

and while I enjoyed MGS2's story, I feel that it's too heavily focused on its themes that the actual storytelling sometimes suffers.

As someone who played RDR when it waa new and after I finished RDR2...I don't get why people still hang onto the idea that RDR did anything better than the sequel. I can understand having a preference, but you gotta apply logic to some extent. Like how RDR2 does the same exact thing the first does gameplay wise except with a million interactive additions.

more =/= better

rdr didn't force me to shovel shit. rdr2 did. technically you can call that "gameplay" but it's by far bloated gameplay that nobody asked for.

I can't think of anything that I've played where this is true. Game sequels almost always refine the gameplay in some way

Mortal Kombat Armageddon

Took out unique fatalities in favor of a boring create-a-fatality system that was difficult to use. They added those clumsy air chain combos. They also subtracted a fighting style from each character, which killed my interest in Subzero because I hated that karate style he got stuck with.

Farcry 3 maybe. Although it's more no story vs dumb story than a better story.

Suikoden 3.
it's actually much better than suikoden 2 in almost every way but the battles and memorable antagonist like Luca Blight. 6 characters in party but you can only control them by pairs, no fusion magic, etc.

mass effect 2?

i wouldn't say the gameplay was much worse. but it was much more simplified.

Agreed. ME2 added several layers of complexity to the story and "flattened" the game-play.

[ I enjoyed ME1's equipment more. Also, imo, it's a shame that they removed the Mako--it could have been fixed. ]

oh yea, while I disagree, some people believe that God of War 2018 is a step down in gameplay from God of War 3

Since Irony did not reply I must assume you both mean "wrt release-order" [BBS has better story and weaker game-play than 358/2].
