Just knowing one day in the far future that every star will burn out and all of their remnants, black holes neutron stars and black dwarves, will decay in to nothing, and that the entire universe will just be a black void where nothing happens and nothing will keep happening, forever and ever. Puts things in to perspective.

That will happen in 4 billion years. The heat death won't happen for an amount of time that can be described as a 1 followed by a septilion zeros

I wonder sometimes if after heat death there is a new big bang. Maybe before our big bang was a previous universe's heat death. It could be an eternal cycle

I don't think a heat death would lead to a big bang. More likely it'd have been big crunch

I'd imagine that whatever happened to create our universe would eventually happen again at some point.

That would require a big crunch rather than heat death. I'm pretty sure our current models don't suggest a big crunch given the universe's rate of expansion is increasing.

worrying about the potential heat death of the universe is pointless when we should really be worrying about vacuum decay.

Worrying about any non asteroid/gamma ray death is pretty pointless. Every other event is so far off in the future there is practically zero chance humanity can even make it to be within .01 % of that even happening

Olaf Stapledon's novel Star Maker ponders the concept in a remarkable fashion. It does everything else in a remarkable fashion, too, but this is a topic about the heat death of the universe and not everything else.

I always thought that proposed organism of the far, far future, one that exists near the end of the universe, was fascinating. Basically, to conserve energy, it awakes, resuming consciousness for seconds at a time, doing whatever it needs to do to keep surviving I guess, then turns off its consciousness completely, for extremely long periods of time. I'm talking years, if not hundreds of years, or maybe even millennia. Very interesting stuff.

Yeah. Proton decay in like 10^34 years is pretty wild too. Really makes you think about how utterly irrelevant we are.

this will probably blow your mind

Man, I really hope that at some point we stop using 'death'-like words to describe cosmic events in the universe and use something a little less pessimistic-sounding (idc if that sounds PC or Orwellian). If the universe's timeline would mostly be described as death or dying, one shouldn't be surprised if more and more people become apathetic and nihilistic.

if we need to invoke the universes eventual demise to keep things in perspective, then maybe were reaching too far to grasp our irrelevance
hey now, because of quantum tunneling there's no way to know that the wave of fundamentally changed space isn't screaming towards us at the speed of light right now...
