Even my parents gave me decades old advice while on the job hunt and they're only in their mid 50s. I went through with it just to show them that we live in modern times by walking into an office, handing someone my resume, recording myself asking to talk to a manager, waiting 40 minutes before leaving and never hearing back from that company again. And then they finally got off my case

Tons of people used to that. Sure its a boomer view, but hes right. You get on the job experience, look good to your future boss, get a foot in the door. Isnt that what interning is?

Hes not saying drop fries for free, hes saying go to a law office or radio station or somewhere you see a career.

Experience wasnt stated. They could be out of college, looking for a job in their field with no experience at all.

Its not like an old man on FB "why dont these young turds on unemployment go work for free and stay off my lawn etc".

He legitimately wants to help them find a career in a truly fucked up environment. Its not good out there man, people that think the way he does are the ones who are gonna make it while lots of younger people have to move home or sleep in their car.

I remember one time I was talking with an 80 year old CPA, and I had mentioned to him that I was thinking about pursuing becoming a CPA as well. I told him that I was enrolled in college courses and once that was done and I had enough accountant time under my belt that I'd go after the CPA test.
He then told me "why are you even bothering with college? Just go and take the CPA test now."

After that, I finally understood that the older generation really has no idea how job markets work now.

Theres no reason for an internship to be unpaid. If you are going to donate your time, a charity is the right place. Internships are for people to build experience in their chosen career path. The business benefits from an internship by training them the way they think they should be and potentially getting first dibs on budding talent. For an internship to be for free is just exploitation.

The trades figured that out. Guy goes to college and works unpaid for experience. Another guy goes to trade school and gets paid to be taught how to do the job as an apprentice. They're both full of bullshit grunt work like fetching coffee or lugging cables into a hot attic up three flights of stairs, but the difference is, one of those people is getting paid for his grunt work.
