i've been seeing a lot of revisionist history lately for this game. at the time of release, there was an overwhelming hatred for it, while very few , like me, really loved it and thought it was fantastic, ok?

i've been seeing a lot of people speaking fondly of this game recently, even from those whom i knew were talking some straight shit at the time, ok?

so what do you think? still hate it, or have you come around?

I never hated it... Ive pretty much liked all Zelda games. Except 2. That game sucks. Also, was never the biggest fan of Twilight Princess. Its was still good. But not even in my top 10... But I had a ton of fun with Skyward Sword...

Twilight Princess single-handedly pushed me away from Nintendo consoles for nearly 15 years.

The only Legend of Zelda games I've ever played are The Legend of Zelda and Link's Awakening DX.

So it's essentially super mario sunshine? Everyone hated that game initially, but then the people who hated it forgot about it, leaving just those who liked it talking about it.

Worst is a strong word (3do)
But for official ones yeah imo it was the worst. I just hate motion controls

Yes, but in all fairness I hate every 3D Zelda, and I especially hate Wiimotes, so it's not like it had much of a chance.

I remember playing through Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword back to back a couple of years ago(both games were the first times I played them).

Both were kinda boring to play IMO but SS at least were more pleasant to look at with its more colourful graphics.

Though TP has my favourite version of Ganondorf.

I never hated it. It had its flaws, but overall I quite enjoyed it. Really enjoyed the relationship between Link and Zelda.

I never hated it - I was just completely apathetic about it. I am still completely apathetic about it.

I stopped giving a shit about the LoZ franchise as a whole after LttP, and my feelings on the matter are exactly the same now as they were years ago.

I do remember this. People hated how cartoony he was. I liked it, though. It was fine for me. But thats how its always been for Zelda. I remember when MM came out, I loved it, but the people on the boards here hated it. Like a lot. Then Wind Waker came out. They hated the style, but now they loved MM. TP was actually liked by most. Then Skyward sword came out. Back to hating then we Zelda, but now loving Wind Waker...

Skyward Sword was pretty bad. It's in the bottom tier of all Zelda games.

I don't know if I hate it, but I strongly disliked where it was trying to take the series.

I was among those who quite enjoyed the game, easily more so than Wind Waker or Twilight Princess.
The issues people most frequently brought up were the motion controls and Fe's braindead advice, neither of which bothered me. The flight controls felt a bit off at first, but after adjusting my grip such that my index finger was along the edge of the top of the controller, the flight (and later, swim) controls became completely intuitive and a joy to use.

As for Fe, I considered her commentary more a reflection of the game's cast's lack of esteem toward Link rather than a suggestion that the player is probably dimwitted enough to actually need such advice in those situations. Link gets disrespected a lot in Skyward Sword, Fe is only a small part of it.

Oddly enough, the only thing that kinda rubbed me the wrong way was the in-game achievement list. The furnix monsters, I thought those were too cool, so I made it a point to get by peacefully whenever they were in the area, thus that one never got checked off. If their fireballs made it impossible to get by when they were in the air, I'd yank them down and quickly get by while they're still on the ground without putting them to the sword. Beating the game without killing any of them makes for a better achievement IMO.

Heh, I lent my Wii to my brother a long while ago. I've had it back for years, but, well, when I went for my Skyward Sword disk, in the case I found the Wind Waker disk. The Wind Waker case, of course was empty. The Skyward Sword disk was in the Wii, so I had to dig out the power supply to get it out. With a Wii U, the Wii is redundant and doesn't get use anymore, so anyway...



They didn't call it an achievements list, but that's basically what it was. It's the hints stone near the academy training ground.

My impression at launch was that it was a very polarizing game. People either really liked it, or they found it borderline unplayable. I saw the theory bounced around that some of the WMP's that shipped with the bundles might have been defective, since there's really no reason anyone should have found the motion controls THAT hard to make work unless the hardware itself didn't work, and most Wii owners had no other reason to own a WMP before (or since) the game launched. I think there's some merit to that theory, though I've never heard confirmation one way or the other. Since then, I feel like the reception has become less polarized, with people disliking it for various design choices instead of "this is literally unplayable" and the strong positive impressions generally losing steam to the point where the average opinion is pretty meh.

Personally, I generally really liked the game, though there were a number of things it did that weren't good. The dungeon and puzzle designs were some of the best in the series, and the story and worldbuilding were quite solid by Zelda standards. I also liked how they did equipment upgrades. The lack of a proper overworld (and the limited exploration that stemmed from that) was a downer, though, and some of the controls (namely the harp, which was just plain garbage in every way) were really clumsy and caused more frustration than anything else. That impression hasn't changed, but I also haven't played the game since my first playthrough back when it came out, so I don't know how it would hold up now. Maybe I should replay it and see.

I was never among the graphics whoring camp for hating on WW, but it never really clicked with me until I played the HD remake. The changes they made there took it from being an okay game (among the worst 3D Zeldas, though that's not exactly a harsh criticism because I like all of them to some extent) to being a serious contender for best Zelda. The fundamental game relies very heavily on exploration, but in the original, that exploration was so slow and cumbersome that it felt more like a chore than anything else and just dragged the game down. The extent to which the remake sped it up and streamlined it (faster sailing, automatic wind direction adjustment, being able to look at the map on the gamepad without pausing) made it actually fun to explore the world, making for a vastly improved overall experience.

it was a fun game, but not as good as stuff like Majora or Wind Waker.
but I will say, the scorpion boss randomly popping up out of the sand was legit one of the biggest shocks I got in a Zelda game.

It's still one of the worst Zelda games of all time, ok?

The only thing that's "lifted" it up a tiny bit for me personally is my continually growing distaste for the N64 Zeldas by comparison*, and thus I'm no longer sure if SS is the "worst" Zelda title. But not b/c of any new fondness for SS itself.

* I never liked them, but used to just assume it was only my personal preference in the face of how much praise they got and not fundamental flaws with the games themselves. As time has gone on, I've been more scrutinizing of them and come to realize that they really are genuinely bad games.

My favorite Zelda game

Really pretty, huge fan of the theme, liked the world, upgrades, items, didn't mind revisiting old places (that's always been Zelda), motion controls sucked but I adapt easily to wonky control schemes and forget they exist.

I liked TP too but it's hard to not admit that there's something wrong with that game, it's just hard to say what it is. Maybe too much running around.
