Do you?

Used to see this rule on all the gas pumps. Not sure if it's a concern anymore

I don't use it too frequently at the pumps but that's because the station I normally use doesn't have good signal service to begin with.

I've seen gas pumps say "Please Turn Off Cell Phone"

So that you pay attention to not cause your tank to flood, or that you don't get distracted enough to drive away forgetting to pay, etc.

How is this possible in a modern day society.

You either prepay inside or you pay at the pump with card.

Just about all gas pumps in my area have that warning right there on the unit, saying do not use your cell phone while pumping gas. I respect that rule as I would any other and do not use my phone while pumping.

You cant overfill your tank though.

Unless youre weird and hold the nozzle as far back as possible. Otherwise it auto clicks off.

I mean I don't usually text while I am at the gas station because I don't have any need to, but a lot of times I am using my GPS while stopping at a gas station so I don't want to have to turn my phone off and back on again.

The danger is not the liquid gasoline (which is not actually flammable), but the vapors. So...any time you can smell the gas vapors, under any circumstances, there is a chance it could ignite.

Is this LIKELY to happen with your cell phone....no the chances are extremely remote as to be non existent. You're probably more likely to cause an ignition through static electricity by reentering and leaving your vehicle while you're pumping. Of course Ivr seen people actually smoking cigarettes at the pump and there was no explosion obviously, so cell phones are way down the list of worries.

Edit- to clarify, to create the conditions where liquid gasoline would be present with no vapors is not something that can really be done outside a lab probably, so do not try at home.

Yes, mainly because I don't want my phone smelling like gas.
