The first example is that the famous scene where Atreyu's horse dies actually happens like 10 minutes after being introduced to them. Like, how is this supposed to be some powerful scene when I haven't even had enough time get to know and love the horse?

The special effects/props are good. And some of the scenes are fun/amusing.

But overall I don't get why I liked this movie so much as a kid.

As far as villains in a kids movie goes, The Nothing is terrifying. Like, monsters and devils are chumps relative to something existential like nothingness.

Such issues are likely a result of stuff from the book being compressed. I know the movie ends at the half way point.

This - part of what made it memorable was the atypical villain. I also really liked that (in a sense) the bad guy won and the protagonist *didn't* have everything work out perfectly at the end (with his home life)

OMG Thank you!!! It's crazy to me every time someone says they cried so hard during this. Artax was on screen for like a minute.

Yeah it's a piece of crap. Michael Ende hated it so much he asked any mention of him to be removed from the film iirc.

I never thought the horse scene was a huge tear jerker. But Atreyus acting in that scene made it impactful as a kid.
That said, we kinda took what we could get back in those days

It shows you the stakes of the adventure, c'mon

People like animals, it's easy to relate even if you don't know the animal lol

Like unless it's homeward bound or something the horse isn't gonna do much if you give him more screentime, it's like if a kid loses his new bike, you don't need to see him play with it for 45 minutes to get why he's sad that it gets run over
