Is this one of these things where you had a legal option to refuse but you would also be signing away your entire life to being the most bullied kid in school if you did?

We had to until High school where you could stay seated if you wanted to. Before, they would usually have the pledge done over the morning announcements on the school intercom and you could get in trouble if you didn't stand and do it.

Really stupid crap.

Every. Fucking. Day.

In NYC. I remember one girl had to get a full letter from her parents in elementary excusing her to not having to stand.

In later years, I just stopped giving a fuck and would just do it sitting most times.

Every single day through middle school. No longer did it in high school.

This pretty much. I'm not even sure if we did it the last few grades of elementary school but I definitely remember doing it in the earlier grades (K-3rd).

No wonder we got so many bootlickers in the U.S. they start the brainwashing shit early

All through Elementary School. Didn't have to do it but most everyone except for like 1 weirdo at least stood.

It's weird af but I didn't feel like, indoctrinated by it. More feels like some old relic we haven't gotten rid of yet.

My elementary school did. I always stayed silent though. Even at six years old, I knew it was inappropriate. It's not far off from asking kids to pray.

Lol, y'all serious? We actually had to do it into high school, though lots wouldn't stand anymore. It was just the pledge in high school. But in elementary and middle school, we also had to sing America The Beautiful. Every. Fucking. Day.

I always wondered why it wasn't the Star Spangled Banner. We rarely did that anywhere.

Also, I'm surprised that NYC of all places did that shit into high school.

I went to Catholic school until 10th grade so we would also say prayers to start the day such as "our father."

So the pledge didn't seem all that different from saying a religious prayer.

I absolutely hate the pledge and religious prayers now though. I even hate the national anthem too.

I'm a part of a teamsters union and we started doing the pledge of allegiance before every meeting. This is all full grown adults. I mean, most who attend these meetings are retirees. There's a lot of pressure to go along with it so I will stand, but I put my hands in my pockets and I don't even move my lips.

Yup, and being a 6yr old immigrant, I found it incredibly strange and uncomfortable.

I also remember being a rebellious little 8yr old two years later who began to omit "God" during the allegiance because my family wasn't religious.

It was generally optional though you were still low key expected to stand at least (no punishment if you didn't) .

By high school it was like once a week and there were a couple of years they didn't do it at all.

That was the west coast. I'm sure in the South they do it before every class or something.

And no one ever told us it wasn't manditory.

Despite going to school in south carolina (a place where you would think it would be mandatory), I don't recall ever getting called out if I felt like sitting down during the pledge. In middle and high school it was whatever.

This. Then you get that edgy 7th grade history teacher that tells you the school can't force you to do it. From there it's a clear path to becoming a radical communist and joining antifa.

There would be a daily pledge every morning, but everyone has a right to abstain.

The response to abstaining could vary from school to school or class to class. When I was an edgy teen, I did have one teacher who wanted to admonish students who didn't want to do the pledge by making them stand outside of class in the hall during. After a couple days, one of the school administration happened to walk by and asked why we were standing outside. She then went into the class to give the teacher a talking to, because she wasn't actually allowed to do that.

Every day even through high school. We had to stop in the hallways too if the pledge was being recited or else we would get in trouble/detention.

I notice my Canadian brethren are being quiet about reciting the national anthem every morning though. That song is ingrained into my head having to sing that every morning for 3 years.
