I think it's mostly just a way to signal. Most people in the LGBTQ community use some form of signalling, from the way they dress or the way they speak.

I think it's a stretch to say many, even. Just think about all the men you interact with in a day. How many have gay accents? Then realize any number of the ones who don't have a gay accent, may in fact be gay.

There is a lesbian equivalent of the "gay male lisp", which is not a lisp but a tone.

Very few of the gay men I've interacted with had a "gay" accent or lisp. A few, but it's mostly the femmiest of twinks. Other than that it's a pretty small sample of the community, they just stick out more for obvious reasons.

Most people I've seen IRL with the "gay accent" aren't gay. And most gay people I've seen in IRL don't have that accent either lol
