an obsession with plot details being revealed, and the idea that this ruins the experience of watching a movie, necessitates an extremely shallow way of engaging with media.

I believe it. My nephew has only seen Homecoming and Far From Home. His parents won't let him watch the others even though he is almost 12. But they made an exception for Spider-man. But he still knows how Endgame ends from kids at school

I dunno, some twists reconceptualize the narratives of entire pieces of media.

like, let's say you're watching The Usual Suspects, and someone gives away the twist; it's still an engaging movie, but a lot of its impact comes with what's revealed at the end.

if the experience of watching something is ruined by knowing one detail from the plot, it probably wasn't very good to begin with

Only if it's a bad story that needs a surprise twist to distract you from it.

I feel like some movie watching experiences, for example, can be elevated by their crazy twists; they don't have to be deep or meaningful, but also fun, and can generate a lot of conversation.

Movies that have an obvious plot but relies on how can be ruined by spoilers.

We already know the Avengers are going to win. But how and what suspense comes from it is what makes the movies.

To claim its just not a good movie because spoilers ruin it is dumb. Who dunnit movies must all be terrible with this logic.

Some spoilers are whatever ("oh wow, the good guys WON!")

but others can change your whole perspective of an otherwise virgin watching or playing experience.

Like if someone spoils the big spoiler of KOTOR, you're never going to organically experience one of the greatest twists in gaming history and it'll color and spoil your entire experience prior to the reveal.

Though a lot of the stuff that can be spoiled in the MCU wouldn't really quite ruin it per se. And the fact that Endgame exists itself spoils the ending of Infinity War *shrugs*

Though i will admit sometimes spoilers can just ruin your mood or otherwise make you lose interest.

I lost interest in RDR2 when I was in Chapter 4 because somebody spoiled Chapter 6 for me. Now it wasn't JUST the spoiler that made me put the game down, but it was kind of the straw that broke the Camel's back

ok. being "elevated" by a crazy twist doesn't mean that the experience of watching it is ruined if the twist is known

maybe "ruined" is the wrong word, but it can have a negative effect on one's interest/level of engagement in that piece of media.

It is. A good twist should make you want to watch the movie again.

A good twist is earned and watching the setup is still enjoyable.

which brings me to a different, but related point: the term being called "spoiler" in the first place suggests that knowing the plot twist will ruin the experience
